myself and 4 other southerners are heading west for the Rubicon the last week of August, we heard that it is nice to have someone that knows the area well to ride with so as not to miss anything in the short time that we have.....we are all in hardcore trailered rigs....any volunteers? we will probably be there for 3 to 4 days before going back eastward to hit moab a couple of days before heading home. also any advice form locals or Rubicon veterans would be greatly appreciated

thanks!

does anyone have any advice on where to start? Loon lake or wentworth springs? is it better to run the main trail roundtrip (can this be done in 3 days, 2nights?) or try and shuttle the tow rigs to the take out point? any advice on must do trails or obstacles?

Hmmm...Let me look at the schedule.

Start at Loon Lake. It's a better trip.

If you are in hard core trailer rigs all you need is enough gas and you can run the whole trail. Loon to buck island, run to the springs and up to observation point then turn around and head back to buck for the second night, head out from buck to loon to load back up.

Loon to buck is about 5 hours, buck to the springs about 2 hours and about an hour up cadillac hill to observation point. Do the math, and this is assuming hardcore trailored rigs that are not going to require stacking and wiching to get through the trail. Great places to camp at the springs, spider and buck island lake.

Good luck.

so is 3 full days and two nights of camping an appropriate amount of time to spend on the trail and hit all the major trails and obstacles or will we potentially be done sooner?

i may be wrong but i don't think that we will have to do any rock stacking or winching....we have one yj heep going that has 36" tires, leafsprings and stock wheelbase- he IS locked front and rear though.... the rest of us have v8's, 40" or bigger tires and linked and stretched rigs

we hope to be getting on the trail sunday morning, August 23rd.....

so from what i understand we can run the trail roundtrip in 2 days and one night if there aren't any problems.....so where does the third day come in? are there side trails and loops off of the main trail? and do they allow night riding there?

my goodness, you're coming all the way across country to do Rubicon in two days? Stop and smell the granite (away form the trail). ;)

drohweder's suggestion would be ideal in my opinion. There's so much beautiful country within easy hiking from Buck Island. Upstream or down you'll see stuff that most wheelers up there never see. You've just got to climb out of the seat.

If your just doing the Con to say you've done it then go for it. 2 days is certainly doable with a small group as long as there's no breakage :D

For the short amount of time you are there, I personaly think Loon lake to Obsrevation point and then back to the springs for a night(full day of wheeling), then another night at Buck and then out to Loon would be best, if nothing breaks. If something breaks try to get to Buck and set up camp. Next day head down through the Springs up to Observation point then back to Buck for another night which will give you some down time for fishing, hiking etc. Next morning pack up and head back to Loon and your off. Remember there are bypasses for all hard sections of the trail (soup bowl, little sluice, old sluice).Your buddy with 36's should take the bypasses for those. Like Wapitidon said the trail has more to offer than just wheeling take as much in as you can and enjoy it. Just to let you know, I run 35's and set up camp at Buck and run day trips, take all bypasses and take it easy.I also stay for about 3 nights 4 days. Good luck and have a fun trip. This is my .02
