Looking for a good used distributor for a 1979 2f. I have deleted all of the smog components if that matters.

I have a used vacuum advance distributor: $125 plus the ride.

$27 to ship. If that works, you can send a money order to the address on my website. I don’t take credit cards, and I don’t do PayPal on electrical parts. Thanks.😊

I will dig out the box this weekend; there are 19 units in there.😉

Thanks! I have 3 of them but do not know if any will work for a 1979.

FYI, Not sure if you're looking for oem, but, the oem distributor for the 79 US model is an electronic, small cap distributor with a 3-point base, paired with an early-ish (79-80) igniter, coil and embedded (pink Yazaki) resistor wire.

I'm in the process of upgrading to an FJ60 large cap setup on my 79 FJ40 and have pulled the oem components (distributor, igniter, coil, yazaki). The distributor had too much slop and the igniter worked but didn't pass all the FSM tests. I got tired of messing with it and am opting for a later oem model. It's a bit of work, but hopefully it will pay off.

In any case, here are some pics of my oem 79 FJ40 US components for reference. If you don't need year-correct oem or even electronic you have lots of options.

Quite honestly I don't know what I need. I'm just a doctor so this is out of my wheelhouse. Any advice you could give me would be awesome! My wiring harness frame and chassis are a 73. The 2f is a 79, no smog stuff involved.

Started a frame off 5 years ago with the intention of getting her ready for my son's senior prom. 45 days and counting.

Since you have a project with a mix of sources (73 wiring, 79 2F engine), you might start with a look at the existing distributor, coil and igniter, if you have any of those, installed or on the shelf and go from there.

A few pics posted here would help with suggestions.

What year and model did your 2F come from? Specifically, did it come from a FJ60? Those have a dimpled push rod cover to accommodate a large cap distributor.

Sorry for the delay. Here is what I currently have. One came from a 1970 and one from a late 1973. I will be running a 2F made 1/09/1979 and an Aisan carb from 1985. Not sure if the 2F is from a 40 or a 60 but my wiring harness is from 12/73. If you have any recommendations please let me know. Thank you!

This is truly a Johnny Cash Cadillac.

The Johnny Cash description helps.

Those distributors you have appear to be mechanical points type. You might pop the caps on those distributors to confirm that and to see if they are serviceable (lots of threads to help eith that).

If yes (points type and serviceable), you'll want to look on your shelf for a coil and ceramic resistor to feed it.

If you can't make any of those distributors work properly, there are lots of available options for new or used.

Either way, have a look for your coil and resistor, and go from there.

Much appreciated! I'll give it a go with what I have.
Oops, one more consideration.

I just realized that the distributors in the photos appear to be vacuum retard distributors.

You may want a more common vacuum advance distributor to work with your newer carb, but you could probably use one you have for now.

Just curious, what is the purpose of a vacuum retard distributor? I’ve got one on my early ‘75 with points and have it capped until I get an advance unit.

Not sure. Not my area. I just happened to notice the difference.

But, I seem to recall vacuum retard distributors were only used a few years (69 - 76). I've read those years had more centrifugal advance that was then reduced by the vacuum retard. Kind of a first attempt to reduce emissions?

About the vacuum advance, I've also read some of folks don't bother with vacuum advance on older FJ40's, so maybe it's academic?

I'd recommend doing your own research.

Here's a link with a chronology of the distributors used on FJ40's

It's a very useful site for other info including wiring.

Whatever you do, make sure you have a good distributor and a working vacuum advance. Both of those look pretty rough. Not sure what parts are still available to fix them.

Following up on this, if you still have one (a vaccuum advance distributor 1979 2f for FJ 40) and it is in good working order I would like to buy it. Pics would be great pls. Having trouble getting your website to load up.
