I’m a new member looking for a 76-84 fj40, I have found 2 within reasonable distance ( one 5 hrs away and one 7), that seem to suit what I’m looking for. Of course being so far away and being what they are I am not buying without looking it over. If anybody is around Nashville, TN and maybe able to get a look at the one at Auto Pro I would appreciate it, they have pics up on their site but not if they underside or under the floor mats.
Thanks,
J
I can post up some pics from their site if that would help anybody with an assessment.

Oh my! Those bumpers on that 76... kinda big huh? If you're entertaining V8's you should take a look at this 71 on BaT. I listed it on behalf of the owner. CA truck, recently relocated in the Denver area Dec 2020. It has a modest reserve. 350, automatic, power steering, disc brakes, nice winch, nice audio, full roll bar, dual tanks, custom seats, Tuffy console. check it out.

Yup that’s more what I’m looking for, but it’s a long ways away and I don’t own a trailer lol. Yeah that bumper would be the 1st thing to go and I’m not crazy about the 308, would rather have the 350.

I hear you but one of the most important things you need to consider when selecting an FJ40 is getting a truck that is NOT a rust bucket. The expense you face with extensive bodywork will quickly outpace what you spend getting a truck home from a nice dry climate like TX, AZ, NV, UT, ID, MT, WY, NM, CA, etc.

I'm in IA. Trucks from the east or the midwest generally have considerably more rust issues. You might get lucky and find one that has recently been brought closer to you. In December, this truck was home in Bakersfield, CA. Now it's in Denver. Not that far from TN. It's about $700 on a transport from Denver to Nashville. Not trying to convince you to buy this one but I always hear buyers saying things like "I'm looking for a Cruiser within a 500 mile radius" and many times that takes the best trucks right OFF their radar. I've had a few hundred FJ40's and let me tell ya, "The BEST ones and the WEST ones."

Yeah I wouldn’t be opposed to having it shipped and I’m learning about the rust belt. I’m on the east end of Tennessee btw another 5 hrs from Nashville. I’m in no hurry either, I’ve read to be patient and take my time, and do my due diligence and research.

If you have a truck that can tow -I’d recommend looking into buying a tow dolly. You can get a used one for a decent price.
This will save you freight shipping cost and you can go see your new cruiser in person and inspect before purchasing. Then tow it yourself.
Also if you plan on taking your cruiser on trips of any distance more than an hour you’re better off towing it anyhow. They’re not designed for highway travel of long distances, they’re loud, slow and suck gas. After an hour or two on highway you’ll be looking for earplugs.
So the tow dolly could be sort of an investment. You will pay a lot of money to have it shipped when you buy it and may or may not be able to see it in person. Allocate that money towards something you can reuse.
I use mine frequently
