What is the low range gearing difference between a 3-spd and a 4-spd xfer case?

4 sp is about 1.99:1 in low and 3 sp is about 2.31 in low. IIRC

David, i may have one. not sure what i plan to do with it yet. i for sure have one that could use some parts. it's disassembled in a box. you can look at it if you want when you are close by. the needy one is free. i may hang on to the good one for another project.

Is the one in the box missing any gears? I can put the gears in my 4spd case if you have them all.

Steve, Shawn's right on the gearing. And the split cases have 2.28, so I could accomplish the same thing by swapping in a later 4spd and split case, with a stronger, quieter tcase, but I'd have to give up my PTO.

actually nothing should be missing. i tore it down because some of the idler shafts were worn and the bearings probably need replacing. all internal gears and shift parts are there. you are welcome to them. the case is good too.

I think I may have finally figured out what you guys are talking about. The transfer case that normally came mated to the older 3-speed transmission has a higher gear ratio (2.31:1) than the ratio of the t-case that normally came mated to 4-speed (1.99:1). Do you want to simply mate the "3-speed" t-case to a 4-speed transmission to get a better gear ratio for off-road purposes or do you swap out the gears to get the better ratio?

Yep - "lower" actually. Whatever it takes, for me, to get a lower 1st gear. It works pretty good right now, I'm just kind of wondering about doing Hell's Gate with the stock '78 gearing...

The lesson is: pay attention to your spotter...

(Hell's Gate is optional)

I'm sure calling it a "lower" or "higher" gear ratio has been discussed ad nauseam so I won't start another thread on this technicality. The ultimate goal is to get more gear reduction in 4-LOW so that you can crawl up/over/around things as slowly as possible without killing the engine - right?

Mark, yes, lower is better (higher numerically) for crawling.
Steve, you can do Hell's gate with stock gears, at least if your carb will let you lug the engine down. Every year I ponder doing it in Ashleigh's, but if I slip with open diffs it's gonna hurt since the skinny tires don't give the body any protection.

And Shawn, I think I'll take you up on the 'case. Are you working Wed or Thurs? I'll be in ABQ, but not sure if I'm driving or riding yet.

It's a stock Aisin. That will handle a good grade I hear...

at work today and home by 10:30am or so tomorrow (Thurs).

FWIW: My experience with 2 differnet ones is that you can go 40 degrees or maybe more going up with a good bit of throttle but that if you let it idle at that slope it'll flood out and be hard to start again.

I can bring it down a week from Monday on the 22nd (as far as I know right now) if you can't make the trip before then. Slim possibility of the 18th, I will be in Santa Fe late but I don't know exactly what time and won't until early that afternoon.

Hell's Gate is less than 40° isn't it?

Steve, either of those should work for me. If you are still able to, let me know and we can make a plan.
thanks
