Greetings fellow cruiserheads,
I'm in Iran Looking at a 1986 Fj70 with the beloved 3F engine. I own two cruisers back home a built 80 and a 82 fj40. Don't have any experience with the 70 series besides looking over one at Pismo a few years ago. The truck has around 120K on it, repainted less than a year ago correctly according to the owner, all Toyota parts used. No rust anywhere on the truck, claims its never had any rust issues. claims the snorkel is factory, can anyone tell from the pics ? reupholstered seats in leather, steel Toyota sports rims, air conditioning and power steering. The truck is in Kurdistan on the boarder with Azerbaijan. I'm in Tehran so I would have to fly out to look at it and purchase it. I'm going with one of my employees who is mechanically inclined. Plan on taking to a local mechanic to look it over before purchase. Where should I look for rust ? I'm kinda glad its got a 3F since I am pretty familiar with the 2F. I be doing the usual, looking for leaks and looking over the front axle seals, any advice ?

Forgot to mention this truck will not be my daily driver, more an offroad weekend toy. The only interior pic I have. The current owner seems like a nice guy definitely a fellow Cruiser lover. He's also installed a DVD player for the back:)

Wow, looks nice. The grille appears newer than '86. Doubt rust will be an issue considering the locale, but be sure to check the frame as well as the body. My advice is to buy it. Wait a minute, that's not a 3F '86.
The rear says the engine is 4500cc 24 valve. That's a FZJ70. Verify year of manufacture, for sure. If you can get that to the US, by all means do so.

Thanks buddy, yes I tripped off the back emblems also. Yes it's a 3f, people put all sorts of stickers and emblems on their vehicles here. I wish it was a FZJ70, that would mean the same engine as my 80, that would be sweet. But I have already conferrmed that its a 86 with the 3f, here are a couple of more pics that the owner sent me. I will for sure bring this baby back with me when I come back to the states. I believe it will pass the 25 year rule.

Does anyone know if I can fit a Toyota winch from an 80 or 100 series on this truck/front bumper? Doubt I can find a Warn or Ramsy winch here so either toyota or some Chinese brand. Can I install an upright type winch ?

Are you a U.S. citizen in Iran?

x2. How did you end up there? Just curious.

The interior gives it away as a good old FJ70. It seems the exterior has been heavily modified, although with Toyota parts.

Front grille, snorkel, rear Toyota emblem on the door, side stripes, 4500 decals, to name a few. Front bumper as well; there is no LX emblem on the rear door to suggest it factory. Overfenders would also be there if it were an LX grade.

Check the manufacture date in the vehicle identification plate. Check the four buttons below the air conditioner controls, one of them should turn the yellow fog lights on.

If this truck is mecanically sound, it should be a keeper.

If the snorkle is OEM,it will have LANDCRUISER stamped in big letters.

I dont know how much you are going to pay for it,but it looks like a good deal if the body is good. Much of the running gear will be the same as an FJ60,but not the US models.

You could probably use a winch from a Japanese 60 or 70 series, bound to be one or 2 floating around canada.

If you import that to CA wouldn't it be subject to smog testing since it is not a diesel? Does it have any smog equipment on it?

Its probably the same as the Australian FJ7*.They have a charcoal canister for the fuel tank fumes and one for the carb.
They recycle the crank gases back into the air intake and have a fuel cut solenoid on the carb
They have none of the spaghetti found on US FJ60.
This one should also have the cylinder air filter, same as the diesels.

Navid that would be so sick if you bought that cruiser and shipped it back to the states...:) I'd have first dibs for test driving... Come home already!

Hey guys sorry for the delayed response, I've been super busy and currently I'm in Samoui Thailand with the folks at a detox resort. Yes American citizen from Iranian decent. I'm currently staying in Iran liquidating some of my family's assets. I miss home and my cruisers but its not that bad here. Certainly very different than how the media portrays Iran. Anyway I checked out the 86 fj70 and wow what a piece of crap. Interior was totally redone right down to the interior door panels in cheap vinyl. Their was a crease on the roof indicating a roll over and other major issues. The mechanic that I took with me to Azerbaijan was very disappointed and simply refused to allow me to purchase the vehicle (not that I wanted to anyways). the snorkel wasn't hooked up, the paint looked like two different colors etc. needless to say I was disappointed. Well the search continues.. I found this Rj70 with the 22r engine. I know light duty but with coils similar to the 80 series and the 22r I think it's not that bad. What do you guys think? It's supposedly in very good stock condition. The short wheel base 70 series are rare here and very desirable Sort of like in the States haha. I like that its got coils and it will be a sweet ride on road as well as off road. It's located in Sheraz. I'll be in Thailand for the next week so I have someone check it out for me before it sells. Anyway here are some pics.

Robert so nice to hear from you, please say hi to your dad from me. I'll be home in August for a few months but looks like I will have to go back to Iran soon. Unfortunately I will have to sell both trucks when I get back since they are just parked in front of my brothers house rusting away. Maybe well take the 80's out for one last run before I put it up for sale. Thinking about picking up an LHD bj73/74 once I'm back home permanently.

I believe it will be exempt due to the 25 year law, it has the 3F engine which was offered in the 62 series so I would imagine it would be easier to import than a diesel .

Here is another fj70 with the 3F this one is a 1989, it's in Isfahan somewhat close to Tehran, the guy wants a lot for it but he says its all original and super clean. I plan on looking at it when I get back. This is the only pic that I have.
