In cruising the posts one person posted that if your '98 or '99 has the locker switch on the dash left of the steering wheel beware. I'm looking at a couple that have that, CarFax checks out, etc and OK priced. My purchase will be going offroad but limited to fire roads and the beach. Thanks for any input.

My 99 has the rear locker switch you are speaking of. Beware of what?

Don't know - I was reading one of the posts about advice on a new purchase here and one person weighed in about not buying one of those but didn't explain why.

do you know what a locker switch does?^

My advice is to buy the newest one in the best condition you can afford. If you want a locker or two make sure you budget for it if you don't get a 98 or 99 with one. With 285 or 295 and a rear locker you'll be impressed with what these trucks can do. Adding an ARB in the rear will cost you about $1,300-$1,500.

Be aware of the front diff in the early models, it is a weak point and noted on this forum. I plan to upgrade mine to an ARB in the front when I get the time to take the front axle out. ~$300 install.

To answer the earlier question I believe it electrically locks the rear differential, an option those years before replaced by the ATRAC system.

ok from your first post i was unsure if you knew what it did! Do you know why you read to Beware? i have had my 98 with rear locker for 10k miles and have been on multiple road trips, engage the locker frequently to keep it from freezing up with no issues.

It was in one of the recent posts on the 100 forum when a member was asking about a particular car he was interested in buying. The person who answered, one of several, didn't elaborate on why to be concerned. but was the only one who mentioned it. Glad yours is trouble free. I think that if this were a real issue it would have come up more consistently in the forum. I'm still going to pursue one.

In the referenced post, the member was warning of the car to potential buyers, not the locker. He passed on it due to warning lights and such.

In my experience the rear lockers have zero problems. I ex recited mine regularly but that doesn't mean that you have to. Just my experience.

The front diff problems seem to be concentrated on those who rock crawl and hop the front ends of their truck. I drove my 98 off-road (but not rock crawling) all over north and South America and never had a single failure of the front diff. Maybe I was lucky or maybe I used the truck within its design parameters. Not sure.

Maybe he meant that sometimes people install the locker switch, but the vehicle doesnt actually have lockers. This has been discussed a lot on here as well, especially on the 80 series.
Yes

I think I wrote that. I stated that if there is a locker switch to the left of the steering wheel it is a 1998 or 1999. The op stated he was looking at a 2000 but stated it had a locker. I was simply trying to tell them that it more than likely wasn't a 2000 model year and not to stay away from it but to be careful if someone was trying to sell him a 98 or 99 as a 2000. Hope this clears up the confusion.
