I have a 91 FJ80 but this 96 caught my eye the other day, so I went and spent about an hour with it today. It has 274,000 miles on it. Story is, the auto repair shop owner bought it from a customer that didn't want to mess with repairing a computer/wiring problem (I wouldn't think this would be to expensive a repair). The shop owner fixed it and it then blew a head gasket. They then had the engine rebuilt (haven't seen documents on this yet) and replaced most of the hoses, etc. in the engine bay. Front two seats have been covered in leather. New tires, etc., etc., you can see the add.
I took her for a drive (never been in anything newer then my 91, felt like i was in a race car) drove fine, no weird noises expect the A/C puts a good load on the motor that causes a bit of noise. Found that the seat brackets had been lengthened for the new owner, and all of sudden the driver side is binding up. I put it in two low and it engaged but no dash light (I believe there is a dash light on my 91, is it the same for the newer?). It does have front and rear diff locks so I drove it off into some dirt and engaged them, and got dash lights. Brakes did seem a bit soft.
The walk around. I found the driver window had a different VIN then the rest of the doors/panels. I also noticed the paint on the inside of the driver's door was a different color then the driver passenger's inside. The manufacturer plate/sticker was also missing from the driver door. The front and tranny skid plates are missing as well. Noticed the lower panel directly underneath the grill is a little wavy too (can kinda see it in the ad pic). Cracked windshield, broken antenna.
I was told they bought for $2500 and have put about $10,000 into. Carmax show no accidents, which doesnt mean anything. It's first year was commercial, spent 16 years with the next owner, then was bought by the shop less than a year ago. 96,97's are being posted in Houston for 10,000 - 13,000 with average of 250,000 miles. Lets see your comments and concerns. Thanks in advance.
