So after an eleven year hiatus I'm looking at another 4Runner (last was a '91).

A local Toyota dealer has a 1999 4x4 with V6 that just came in the lot. It has a 187k miles on it and according to carfax four previous owners and was originally sold in Washington.

Carfax doesn't show any previous accidents, but you know how that goes. It did show a Toyota dealer replaced the front brake pads and machined the rotors, replaced the timing belt , the water pump, timing belt idler at about 141k miles.

I couldn't get in it (I will this afternoon), but took some pics from the outside. The body has some dings in it appropriate with its age, but nothing too horrible.

It has a sliding sunroof, running boards, "Value Package #4" (whatever that means...power stuff I assume) and a 4.100 differential.

I crawled underneath and see a bit of surface rust on everything and the rear hitch has surface rust as well. I took some pics I'm posting below.

Dealership basically wants $6k before tax and won't negotiate price any further.

What do you think?

Here are some pics (dealer hadn't had a chance to clean it up yet):

More pics..now with engine compartment...

Anything that looks alarming? I took it for a test drive and it felt very similar (but more powerful) to what I remember my 1991 feeling like.

I climbed in the driver's seat and got an ear to ear grin. It felt like being home again after 11 years!

Where does that power wire go to that's coming off of the battery post? Backside of the engine bay there is some shiny new parts, what are they? Everything appears dingy, which is OK...almost good. If you find anything that's not dingy or any bolt heads that aren't, it's been worked on recently.

The wire looks like it originally went to a stereo amp that is no longer installed. Pretty sloppy install job.

I'm not sure which parts are shiny. Everything in the engine compartment looked pretty dirty to me.

CoCo county

I say move on and find a better deal, overpriced IMO typical dealer looking for a victim.:D

Where are you located in CoCo county? I'm in Pittsburg and currently trying to finish my engine swap, here is some teaser pics.:D

Update?

Did you find anything on CL or stealership lately?

I'm thinking that when we are talking about $1000 bucks either way then the potential repairs it may need is something to look at.
When were all the fluids changed? what needs changing? include brake, steering and coolant especially. Then of course the diffs, tranny fluid and t-case. I really look at the tranny, and engine fluids and levels for possible problems and thus $. Check out the pricey stuff to replace.
When was the timing belt and water pump/pulleys replaced last? A sticker looks to be on the left side of the belt cover. Done recently means less $ to possibly shell out sooner.
Does the power antenna go up and down smoothly?
Then condition of brakes, windshield and tires. Does the air work, radio, wipers and rear hatch window etc. Check it all out

The wire seems as though it initially headed off to a stereo amp that is no more drawn out fixed. Pretty messy establish job.this section and the hard lines over the admission complex. At any rate to me they look more current.
