hi all,

going tomorrow to look at 70 series. any tips or what to look for in particular? no experience other than with my FZJ80

vehicle is 89 model SWB hardtop with 2.4l engine. owner says stock engine??

Thanks for any insight, or where to look. exterior pics are awesome, just hope everything else works out. This vehicle is in Kuwait, and if I do get it, will come home with me.. same as the Mideast 92FZJ80 .

really curious about the 2.4 as most I see here have 4.0 the 2.4 is petrol, not diesel.

It could be the 2.4 2LT. If you are lucky it's the mechanical injected version that can be tuned and is slightly more reliable than the 2LTE. That series engine is perfect for a Hilux but is a bit of a dog in any 70 series. Usable but you'll want to upgrade at some point. Those motors are known for head failures but can be babied and are great with gas mileage. It could be a 22R in that market...which is actually better suited to an LJ.

definitely not a diesel, made sure to ask the owner.. odd, but diesel vehicles are hard to find in gulf region. head up into Iraq, and they are everywhere. Jordan has even banned importing diesel vehicles, and gas costs there is roughly same as US, but 95 octane

Kuwait is super cheap on gasoline for obvious reasons

A petrol model is called an RJ70. I haven't seen one with a 22RE, the one below is the 22R

Check for rust in the back corners under the tail lights. 22R motors have a good rep for reliability, but like the 2.4 diesel it'll be no rocketship. The KZJ/LJ/RJ70 gets you lighter weight 8" diffs than the bigger units in other cruisers but the plus side is that they are coil sprung which is a nice improvement over leaf springs both on & offroad.

Cheers

didn't see any rust.. that's about it. not going to waste time putting pics up. beautiful machine, but mechanically neglected. owner just put lift kit, new wheels, tires, winch, etc. roof rack, LED's.. . no rear brakes, leaking oil, transmission not shifting good.. back to the search.. haha oh yeah. it was a carb'd 22R

The 22r/22re is a great little reliable engine with tons of support state side and I would think the RJ70 would be a lot more desirable than its LJ cousin.

I kind of like these half Cruiser half mini truck 70's. Mostly for exactly why you say, tons of excellent support and upgrades in the states.

Cheers

Couldn't agree more. The idea of a lhd 70 with commonly available parts is very appealing. I was looking at 22re motors on fleebay and there are high performance long blocks for sale for under 2k and there claming up to 160hp! I can tell you that sounds like a lot more fun than cruising everywhere with the pedal to the metal like I did in my old bj70 or waiting for a 2lt to crack the head in the middle of nowhere.

Shoot, for the right price I wouldn't write it off. Good luck with your search.

Check out LC Engineering if you have not. Seriously sweet gear they sell. And do I even need to say it but Marlin Crawler too.

Cheers

I'm familiar with them. The amount of upgrades, parts and info for these motors is amazing. I'm currently refreshing a 22re in a 93 4x4 pickup that I purchased for a good price, the whole timing chain kit including cover, water pump and oil pump plus fedex shipping cost under 90US.....

Defuzer1, bring all of these RJs over you can;)! I will gladly take it off your hands if your not happy with it.
Are the Mideast trucks you've looked at equiped with AC?

Mechanical problems are not that hard to fix and if it has a good body, it may be worth fixing. Its really about the body with these.

yes, on the 70 series with air. have only seen the older 40 series without air here, some have, some don't.
