Hey guys,

I'm not really in the market for another truck after my DD purchase, but a cheap 1983 BJ42 was advertised in the Toronto area so I thought I'd take a look.

The add says, "1983 toyota Landcruiser FJ40 diesel, 5 speed with electric winch, $3,500 obo" so I'm not sure if the guy doesn't know what he's got or he has a FJ40 with a diesel conversion. I'll find out tomorrow.

Any tips on what to look for in the way of major rust would be great. What is the going price for these trucks from the east coast? There's one on ebay going for $4K US.

Id be way leary of somebody that didnt even know what the bloody heck they were driving.

Not a cruiser nut that's for sure.

There's some in the Vanc. buysell for $12k CAD.

If it has a five speed then it's probably a BJ42 (unless of course a fiver was put in during a conversion). From my experience, check carefully....

Inside boxing of frame rails. In fact, pull the skid plate down and get in there with lots of light and a screwdriver.

Rear diagonal braces going from frame rails to rear cross member where the taillights etc. are.

In general, regarding the frame, I would look to see if it is coated with an oil anti-rust coating and ask the seller if this was done regularly.

Fuel tank skid plate and hardware. Hard fuel lines. Water separator.

'Outside' part of the cowl underneath the footwells.

Cowl in front of doors (will be obvious).

Otherwise, I think it's common sense. I have an aluminum tub etc. so I don't know about other problem areas, but everybody knows about the rear wheel wells and quarters.

HTH
