Hello all, ive been lurking on this forum for a while finally made an account lol
im currently looking at an 07 Gx470 with 121,000 miles on it , 1 owner
The vehicle was serviced at a lexus dealership its entire life near where i live.
timing belt and water pump replaced, 120,000 mile service performed, transfer case replaced new brakes, drivability/performance checked etc..
all this was done at the dealership where its being sold
I checked out the vehicle and it looked near perfect except for some rust underneath
how much rust is bad enough to warrant not buying the vehicle ?
they are asking $18,500 for it, is this too much ?

$18.5K is pretty high, I paid $10.7K for my '07 with 135,000 miles on it, but that's here in Missouri where they aren't as popular as the West Coast (overlanding rigs really aren't a "thing" here - most people want a Jeep or diesel truck).

The rust may or may not be an issue. Can you share some pictures? If it is just surface rust it's not a huge deal; if there are any areas of the rust penetrating into the frame I'd walk away. However, for that price, it should be spotless underneath. Even cleaning up surface rust and repainting/undercoating the underside is not a huge deal but not something you should have to do on a GX that is being sold for that price.

thank you for the reply, ill grab some pictures, but i think you are right it is pretty high price. other than the rust the car looks literally perfect.

$18.5k is definitely too high. Like $5-6k too high. It would have to be in showroom condition for that sort of money. Even considering the GX value increase the last ~12 months that’s just too high.

So I brought up the rust issue to the dealer selling it and they are willing to play ball with me luckily, Im going to snap some photos tomorrow when Im off work and ill post them up here for you guys to look at, I basically lowballed the heck out of them due to the history of the GX frames rusting and I emphasized that point to the dealer who is willing to go down in price to 15,000 which may still be too high what do you think?

It’s a tough sell to me if there is any rust of any kind. Perhaps I’m overly picky? $15k with rust is still too much for me to pay. It’s up to you to determine if that works for you.

Maybe someone else has more experience with rust on these to comment..? My GX’s are rust free.

On the east coast GX’s are going anywhere from 8-12k. You can find some good ones around 10k. Might be worth your time to find one in the Southeast and fly down / drive back?

For this one you’re describing, if the rust is not bad, I wouldn’t want to pay more than 12k. Good luck!

Thanks for the input glad this forum is here as this will be my first Gx
I have been in love with these cars for some time, just have not decided to buy one until now.
im finding dealers here in seattle like to command premium prices for cars in less than optimal shape...
I have been seeing Gx's with 3 or more owners and questionable carfax history's going for 18 - 19k ...

its crazy the prices on these have gone through the roof from those youtubers making videos on them ... so unfortunate because no matter what way i look at it in order to get one in excellent condition im looking at paying 15 - 17k..

They are way cheaper in the Midwest too. Granted we have rust issues, and I'll be spending a weekend cleaning it mine after it gets warm. As others indicated, with prices being so high in the PNW it might be worth a trip east or south. 200k GXs typically sell for 7-8k here, very few go above 12k. 460s start at 18-20k though.

There’s a dealer in north Texas that frequently gets 470’s and prices them very competitively. Here’s an ‘04 w/79k miles for ~$17k.

They are reasonable and will negotiate. They

I'll add my 2 cents, because I just finished what (I think) was a pretty exhaustive search (to give you an idea: I probly looked at 500 of them pretty quickly online, & maybe 50 or more in depth...I pulled 5 CarFaxes on top of the free ones that some dealer websites give you). I was looking mainly in the Southeast, but did also inquire on a few in TX & the Northeast. I'd say for a nice one in the ballpark of 150k miles, with no dash cracks, good interior, timing belt done, & Lexus service history, it would generally range from $12-16k. I definitely saw a few up at your $18k price point, & there are plenty in crappy condition down at $10k with that mileage.

I ended up with a 2008, 1 owner, no accidents, great interior, in NC it's whole life, with 140k, but it needed a rear airbag replaced & the timing belt needed to be done (otherwise the service history was very good). I got it for $11k, because of those needed fixes. After a few months of searching, I think I ended up with a good deal.

Take that for what it's worth...geography definitely matters when it comes to price...so, if you're willing to take a trip you may end up with a much better deal. But be warned: I took a 5 hour drive down to Atlanta to buy one, after looking at lots of pics (which looked great), & talking to the dealer several times (he said "this is the cleanest GX I've had!")...it was not nearly as good as advertised, so I passed on it & wasted an entire day driving . So, if you're going to take a trip for one, make sure you have absolutely as much info as possible!

The rust is a big variable, & it's impossible to judge without pics...even with pics I won't weigh in...I'll let others who are more knowledgeable do that.

The good news is there's lots of GXs out there! So, take your time & get what you want!
Good luck!

im thinking about picking that gx up from that dealer in northern texas and it so happens my father lives in dallas so it works out, although it was in an accident... on its carfax history, the dealer claims no frame damage and that its good to go, ill probably get a pre buyers inspection done to it and if it checks out that might be the one.
