Longs, Hi-Steer, or Winch?

Should I buy Longfields, Hi-Steer, or Winch?

From personal experience I would suggest the winch. Someone made a comment about there always being someone around to pull you out. While its true that all the cruisers I have wheeled with are always willing to help out, I always hated having to have someone winch me out. It limited some of the things I would tackle because I didnt want to have to rely on someone else. They do call them self recovery units. Your truck will drive with or without the Hysteer. They longfields are great but put them in after you bust you factory ends. I also agree with a bigger winch. A expedition loaded 60 is heavy, not to mention pulling your friends. Jegs is running a special on 12.5 k T-max delivered for $670. I love it and it works great.

Chad--I voted winch. It can solve way more problems then the other mods you list. I bought a used 8274 and rehabbed it-it's the best choice. Dylan's fit in his ARB is clean, even though it isn't supposed to fit.

The stuff you'll be in up in Alaska is sloppy and wet-less risk to your axles, and less need for a locker. I go up there every year, and it isn't the Rubicon. Without a front locker, your front axles and birs are likely OK.

Save the high steer for your spring over.

I will be happy to do a birf job with you and show you how to change one. I can even show you the easy way that can let you change one in way under an hour.

Thanks for the Aussie locker data point in the other thread..

If I get the Longs, I'll probably do the Aussie Locker and change the thirds to 4.11s at the same time.

Agreed, do the whole front end at once if at all possible.

this is some pretty sensible and great info.

my 2 cents:

1: high steer from Marlin

2: used M8000 in Craigs list for $250

3: spare birfs or complete axle shafts

4: front locker

5: 4BTA swap

6: dual cases

7: 4.56's

oops thats my wish list

good luck. sounds like your rig will be sweet!!

clint

Jeez, Clint! You're hoping he has one hell of a return!!!!

Hi-steer
If it were my rig I'd want bumpsteer gone as soon as I could make it go away! Then work on the rest as funds allow.

Butt

Amen, brutha. Nothing worse than driving down a highway at 70 and all of a sudden "BAM" bumpsteer!

What is this bumpsteer everyone is talking about? I can see why hysteer will help but is it that bad? What causes it?

It's about trigonometry. If your drag link is at a high angle, when a wheel is forced up or down by a bump, it changes the effective distance from the steering arm to the Pittman arm, thus moving the steering axis and causing "bump steer". It isn't bad on a 2.5 inch lifted 60, but might get more significant with increasing lift. One of the beauties of highsteer, is that it makes the drag link nearly horizontal, and it's effective lingth does not change when the position of the wheel changes.

So I posted this poll on three diferent forums: IH8MUD, Expedition Portal, and TTORA.

Here are the results from the three forums -

.........Winch....H-Steer....Longs
'MUD.....13...........6..........10
ExPo
......8...........8............2
TTORA
....3...........2............0

TOTAL
...24.........16.........12

So, not that I bow to the masses, I think I will get a used 8274 to go with the ARB winch bumper. I hope to be a good citizen and spend my $1800 stimulus package on hi-steer. Next will be gearing with an h41 or 4.56 diffs. Finally longs, and then a front locker. A toybox and 1hz swap converted to WVO is way down the list.

Please feel free to add any more comments or say how foolish my plan is ( just try to be entertaining about it. :p)

Well, I bought a Warn 8274 off of eBay today. Can't wait for it to get here so I can go out and get stuck! I got the winch first because most of the time that I have to go out will be by myself.

Gearing and hi-steer is next. Of course, the LIFT NEEDS TO GET ON FIRST....
