I'm about to start a front axle rebuild. I'm planning on throwing in 30 spline Longfields and I just noticed that they offer 4340 hub gears as well. I'm not running anything wild. I will have a front air locker shortly but it's unlikely that I will run more than teeny tiny 33" tires. The 30 splines are more just for peace of mind with a front locker than pushing the limits and needing the ultimate LC axle. Do I bother with the hub gears or spend the $140 on something else?

Or to put it another way - is anyone blowing up hub gears? If so what are you running for tire size and what were you doing when it blew?

TIA,
Joel

Wouldn't it be better to lose a hub than something else?
It seems to me if you have Longfields inner/outers and they aren't going to break the stress is going somewhere else. So what is the next weakest link?

The gears do not blow up, what heppens is that when the hub blows it strips out the splines on the longfields. Basically killing the longs..

The 4340 inner slugs are more to "protect" the longs when the hub fails. The hub blows but the inner does not. So the hub splines on the stub of the birf do not die..

the other nice thing about this is that with a set of these inner hubs you should be able to convert Aisin IFS hubs to work on a Straight axle..

In this case I would spend my money elsewhere.
With 33's stock gearing and moderate wheelin if you kill your hub I'll give you a cookie..

Thanks that makes sense.

I don't think the IFS hubs will work on a straight axle even with the 30 spline inners. I have a set at home and I think they are a lot shorter than the straight axel hubs. If I remember I'll check tonight.

Please do, I have held the IFS stuff in my hands and understand that it is the same (cept for the inner gear) but it would be nice to know if that is bad info or not :)

I thought I had a side by side picture in my photobucket but I didn't see this morning.
I have one spare Aisin straight hub and a pair of IFS hubs.

Just checked it out, all the aisin hubs are the same, the other set of course spline Warn hubs is about 50% taller.

I should get rid of some hubs.

I 'll take the IFS stuff ;)

he does :)

The Aisins on an early 90's Isuzu are supposed be the same, too, other than the inner gear. I haven't seen this first hand, though.

where's my cookie? i did it unlocked with 33 radial claws at the same time as a cv.

unhealthy 2f, regular gearing

Probably loose then.. or you smacked it on a rock

Those hubs are VERY strong.

not denying they are strong :grinpimp: but yeah, i think they were probably cracked/ weakened from a few rock encounters in their life

Great info. I didn't know of that OR.com Aisin link in their Toyota section. I also didn't know Bobby offered 4340 hub gears.

So, school me on which Aisin hubs I could install Bobby's 4340 hub gears into:

IFS Toyota?
30-spline Toyota (works on both straight axle pickups & 30-spline FJs, right?)
???

Anything else to know for the hub gear install?

I learned t his lesson in mountain biking, eventually everthing breaks over time.

Metal fatigue, its gonna happen.

Reminds me of my handle bar on my mountain bike, doing a manual down Whistler getting ready to launch myself of twenty foot jumps when my bar pulled off in my hand at the top.

Call it what you will, but bars are a one maybe two year life span, even if they look good put a new bar on and have that piece of mind.

Guess the same can be said for hard core off roading.
