Stupid question, but how can you tell if a '97 80 has lockers or not? Are there extra indicators on the dash? Thanks

There is a dial to the left of the steering column, labeled lockers. You'll have to verify with pictures and or describe the dial to just about every seller as they usually don't know what they are either.

I saw your post in the FJ cruiser section, 80's and FJC's are two different cars. You'll have to figure that out on your own.

^ This + sometimes you need to look underneath to be sure the actuators are indeed in the 3rds.

Thanks! Yes, no one seems to know what I'm talking about when I ask. Regarding the FJ v. the 80, I've been in both. I'm thinking the extra room in the 80 would be better for an expedition rig.

The locker button might be there but the lockers might not! Look at the axles as it's the only way to be sure. In front of the rear axle you should see the locker assembly. on the front axle it is at the back....if that makes sense?

Click on this to see what the "magic dial" looks like-----> http://www.google.com/imgres?q=toyo...=131&tbnw=158&start=0&ndsp=14&ved=1t:429,i:71

FYI, it's not labeled "LOCKERS" as stated above. Check under the vehicle to see that each axle has something that looks like this------>http://home.4x4wire.com/erik/diffs/hipinion_electric.jpg (the chunk hanging off the side of the 3rd member)

In a few rare cases, some A hole will put the DIFF LOCK switch in the dash before selling the vehicle to a buyer who never checks underneath for the diff lock actuators.

One more unrelated question. Is it possible to replace the automatic transmission with a manual? If so, any idea what that would cost? It's too bad Toyota doesn't offer them w/ manual trans in the U.S. Or a diesel either, for that matter. Thanks

awesome, thanks for the picture of the dial. my search continues... trying to find a '97 80 with less than 150k miles on it that a mom has been driving. who isn't, right?

Yes it is possible, cost I'm unsure as I am not in your 'manor'.

Are you talking about a Toyota transmission or something else?

They are out there. Break out the checkbook and be ready.

Easiest way is to simply drive it and test. That makes sure that everything is there and nothing is missing. It would be difficult to rig up an 80 so that the dash indicators show working lockers, let alone actually make it drive differently when "locked".

Ask sellers for a picture of the data plate; I think it should be somewhere near the driver's door. Search for K294. K292 means no factory lockers. That way, you don't give away the fact that you are looking for a specific feature.

Good luck!

If it were me and I wanted to make absolutely certain the truck had lockers, i would have the seller snap a pic of the door sticker so that you can read the coding and also a pic of the VIN under the windshield glass.

K294 and matching VINs would indicate the truck came with lockers....now that doesn't mean someone didn't swap out the axles at some point.

Also have to check for the locker ECU under the kick panel, the harnesses running to each axle and being connected to the locker motors, and the switch on the dash. There's potential for stuff to go missing.

The diff lock lights come on when you first start as a bulb check.

Yeah, but they won't come on and blink properly while trying to engage, then stay lit while engaged. Then do the reverse and stay unlit when finally disengaged. This would be beyond most "throw a DIFF LOCK switch in it" type scam artists...

Just drive it. And if you can't drive it, have the seller take a video of engaging and disengaging the lockers. And if they don't work exactly as they should, then ask the seller to fix it or reduce the price...

And hope he doesn't try to fix them, 'cause he or the dealer "experts" will probably just make things worse.

I agree that scam artists will not go that far ..usually however, all the trucks I have seen that never had lockers also did not have the graphics on the dash as well. To fit a switch is one thing, to fit the dash and wire it as you mentioned is another.
