Search didn't provide any clear answers on this, so I'm starting this thread.

I'm selling my 80 and starting a 100 project.

On a '99 100, I'm wanting to install lockers in the front and rear diffs. The front diff, due to it's known weak nature, is mandatory, and I can't really see doing the front without the rear. However, the prices I'm seeing (just for the parts alone) are pretty astounding.

Anyone have any suggestions on setups / suppliers / etc. that can help me navigate around a pretty heavy financial obstacle?

If you're talking about manual lockers, then the ARBs seem very popular on this forum. To save money I suppose you could put an automatic "locker" of sorts in the back but that may be false economy in the great scheme of things.
OTOH, it's not what you're asking and I hate to throw more potential expense at you but you might also want to consider regearing if you're having all this done outside, if you think lower gears may be useful later on. Might save you $$ in the long run.

Do you already have a 100? Reason I ask is that very, very few '99s came without factory rear lockers.

Typos sent from my HTC EVO using the IH8MUD app...

Unless it's an LX, in which case it likely just has the limited slip diff.

I thought about a "lunch box" locker for the rear, but unless I've not looked in the right places, there don't appear to be any of these "automatic" lockers available for 100s. As for gearing, I only plan on running 33s, so doing that would probably be more expensive than it'd be worth to me.

Unfortunately, I currently own two 100 series Land Cruisers that are rear locker-free

Nope, the truck about which I'm asking is a Land Cruiser

Mandatory? Plenty of peeps wheeling 98's and 99's hard without issue and with the OEM diff.
There are enough instances of blown 2-pinion front diffs on 98-99 LC's that it wouldn't be worth the risk to me. Many of the reported instances of people destroying these front ends have been on VERY insignificant obstacles.....That being said, maybe it would have been more accurate for me to say that I feel a front locker is mandatory for ME.

Wow, you own both of the locker free ones, huh?

Install costs are competitive with the prices of the ARB lockers LOL, especially the front locker.

Which is the main reason miy ARB's are still staring at me on the floor, plus I am on the fence about regrear. Gotta buy new tires before I can decide about regearing. It's an expensive drug.
