I can't remember: Is the rear diff in the LJ78 a limited slip, or is it an open diff?
Okay thank you.I've been told ARB makes an air locker that will fit my 1995 KZJ78 by a reputable shop. They make one that fits an 8" rear end, which my KZJ has. Not sure what the LJ has. Other option is to try to find one of the E-lockers that toyota made as a factory option. Those are hard to come by though, people tend to hold on to them. I'm looking for a rear locker for my KZJ as well.
do they share an axle with other models? Most are open.
Okay thank you.

Right? I cant imagine them being lighter duty than a 4runner or fj cruiser and they have them. SillyNot sure how any truck that is cab on frame with solid axles could be considered too light for lockers. The axles are based on an 80 series. This isn't a 2000 Prado, it's more of a Landcruiser.
Did yours come with a factory e locker or did you out it in? Really would love to find an e locker for my KZJ78.The front axle of the Prado 70 series has the same differential, axles, birfields, knuckles, spindles, hubs and brakes as the heavy duty 70 series. Only thing that's different is the housing (to suit coil springs instead of leafs) and gear ratio. So you're right, it's definitely not light duty.
The rear axle has a 8" diff as opposed to the 9.5" of the heavy duty 70 series. And it's a semi-floating design, not full floating. Yet, it's still a tough piece of kit for the most part. I've used my rear e-locker countless times and not had a problem. I've also towed a camper for years with my truck. No issues with axles or diffs.
All that said, locker's need to be used properly and in the right situation only. Abused enough, things can always break.

I'm also wanting to buy a rear locker for my LJ79, and I have researched into this quite abit. As GTSSportCoupe said our only options are either the factory e-locker or a specific aftermarket. E-lockers are harder to get by so I looked at the various aftermarket options. The most one I liked, and the one I'd want to get, is the TJM pro locker. I like it's design better than the ARB one, mostly it's actuation which uses a sealed pneumatic cylinder. Downside for me is it's harder to get in Europe so it'll be more expensive importing it.
