I have a lock right in the mail, coming from summit racing (central4drive has them for $50 cheaper, but summit matches prices and free shipping)
I plan to install this myself and had a few question before i attempt it. I have read the online write-ups and it looks easy, but

1) What tools will i need, i have wrenches, sockets and a big jack.

2) How are the axles removed. Is it only the clip in the diff that holds them in, or do i need a slide hammer? How is that clip removed? Do i remove the drums?

3) There is a bunch of talk about shims. I have some new factory ones coming to me from a yoda dealer, are they the ones i want?

4) Can i re-use the diff cover gasket?

5) Synthetic oil in the rear?

I am going wheeling with a few Toyota friends in a couple of weeks and i've never taken the LC out before. I have new wheels and tires waiting in Seettle for the trip (15x8 3.325 and 32x9.50 Bias Ply Swampers) . I need to try and keep up with 2 SAS'd 4runners and a lifted Rubicon, and i was told the locker is essential.

Thanks for your help

1. Besides the usual tools, you should have a Factory Service Manual handy. It won't explain how to install the LockRite, but it will tell you how to get the axle shafts out, how to check the shims, torque values, etc. You'll need a decent torque wrench that you can trust.

2. See above. Condensed version: put jack stands under the rear axle, remove the rear wheels, slide the drums off (make sure the e-brake isn't set). Drain the axle, pop off the rear cover, get the spacer out of the diff, then extract the C-clips. Pull the axles out. No slide hammer needed.

BTW, you don't really have to pull the diff out of the axle to do the LockRite install.

3. The LockRite instructions will show you how to check/set these.

4. No. Get a new gasket from the dealer, it's cork.

5. Absolutely.

After you get it installed, you'll be a member of the click-click-click-BANG club.

Hey where was that place where you first looked I have not checked them out. I am always looking for new places for parts. Thanks in advance.....Ben

Hey KLF,
That was an awsome little write up there.

It should be quiet if you get the tolerances right. Except in parking lots.
