"No telling" is right on the money John Smith! These things are like old IH pickup trucks. You had to know what day and what shift they were built to know which GM, Ford or Chrysler parts they used that day!

I do not think it is as bad as you are saying...

The real issue is the fact that you are working on something that has been around for almost 40 years, has had multiple previous owners and is very likely a collection of parts that someone put together to make something "work".

Yes, just like any other vehicle manufacture there are specific cut off dates for when things left the factory. Once they are in the wild, anything is possible, and "rules" simply become a suggestion.

Hi Poser, thanks. I've been busy with a variety of things. It took three days to get a new water pump sorted out. Apparently they made at least three and maybe four versions; 1) No clutch fan, no oil cooler. 2) Clutch fan, oil cooler. 3) No clutch fan, oil cooler. 4) Finally my model, Clutch fan and oil cooler. The only pumps available were #1 & #3. So I had to have the clutch fan mount swapped from one to the other. I did install the Pertronix ignition that I know you aren't a big fan of. I had the vehicle running like a top after spending some time chasing a occasional cutout that I attributed to electrical as I felt a fuel issue would not be abrupt. I violated the primary rule in troubleshooting when I changed both the capacitor and the ballast resistor. Problem gone. So all parts from running great are stored in the dash box. But a month in and the Pertronix is just as smooth, better starting and a side benefit is that there is no occasional run on after turning off the key. Now I am finishing drawings for making a copy of the Gobi roof rack that would cost me $6-7,000 to buy and ship and pay customs fees on to get it down here.

Thanks. I realized yesterday when checking roof crown that I made the roof flush with the windshield instead of hanging over two inches. Consequently the front supports had to be raised way up to mate to the front mount. I'll make another pair of front mounts to check and verify what I'm thinking.

The front brake drums I picked up from my local Toyota parts dealer wouldn't work. They were the 295mm diameter units, however, they were for 2 1/2" wide shoes not the 3" that I have on my '79 FJ40 non-USA. I did take the shoes off to see if the drum would fit, which it did, but the backing plate is stamped for the wider shoes so this wouldn't work out. So, I more or less swapped all those brake parts back for a pair of Aisin FHT-002 hubs. They are 30 spline. I am responding, in general, to the discussion regarding the snap ring or the bolt/washer retention. My Selectro hubs don't look like the pictures I have found. Actually, if you look at the picture of various hubs earlier in this post my Selectro look most like the WARN shown on the far left. There is a wire ring inside the primary hub body that will prevent the hub from coming off, but it is maybe 1mm in diameter wire and is very soft. The bolt/washer are NOT net to the gear inside the Selectro hub. I would say 6mm or 1/4" of inbd/outbd movement. I won't know until my Cruiser Outfitter stuff arrives whether I use the snap ring or the bolt/washer for these new Aisin hubs.
