LC 100 2001 300,005k steering wheel locked while driving. Only going about 20mph (turning right). Skidded to a stop in the neighbor's yard. Was able to unlock the steering after a few start/stop with the ignition. Would have been extremely bad at highway speeds. Replaced Lock Cylinder Tube Bracket at shop.

Would have been bad at highway speeds for sure. Your neighbor more than likely said, “hey, you can’t park there!”

I have an OEM unit in the spare tools bin. Wondering if I should replace now and have the current as a backup. Heard the new part is made of stronger material. Wondering if an LC vendor would bring something else to market.

I would report it to NHTSA. Given it seems to be a common fault and on such a safety critical system it could and should end with a Takata style recall.
