Lots and Lots of paper towels!

Depending on what anyone wants to do regarding grease. I have a buddy who owns an auto parts store locally and stocks redline synthetic grease, gear oils, and oils as well as Mobil 1 motor oil. I can get some and bring it over for whoever wants some. I used 3 quarts of Redline gear oil for the front, two cans of redline synthetic grease for the two front hubs, 3 tubs of moly grease for the birfs, and 6 cans of brakleen to clean it all along with a pressure wash before I started. The redline specifically states that it has moly in it and is suitable for CV joints and other "high pressure" applications but my buddy and I couldn't decide for sure whether to go for it with the birfs or go good old moly. I decided to play it safe and go moly but I am sure it would be fine. I searched here and couldn't find a difinitive answer either way. FWIW

Looking forward to seeing buds and meeting new ones.

Oh, I will bring my 54mm hub nut socket for anyone to use as well. If anyone needs any other special tools speak up and I will bring what I can.

Dang i need to rebuild my front end right now.. but its not the right time for me. Im still working on a few other projects (trying to save my penneys). Not to mention its the expo this weekend. Maybe we can do another rebuild party in November... or do a quarterly thing for socal80's members that need it done.

I have a wedding to go to at 4pm so I will have to leave for that, at about 3:50 or so. :flipoff2:

I hope you're not in the wedding! A little grease under your nails (and up to your elbows) always makes a bridesmaid happy:grinpimp::grinpimp:

Do you remember how to get here?

Mo,

I looked up the Redline grease (Redline CV-2). I couldn't find a Moly% in their literature, but it states it's a synthetic Moly. It should be fine, as they call it "CV-2", which I believe stands for constant velocity. But I could be wrong. I'm not to educated on the 80, but the steering knuckle is pretty much a CV, right? They also state it is compatible in all sorts of applications, from high speed, high pressure, bearings, etc...

I'm okay with being the guinea pig for this. I'll also take the offer on the gear oil, and bearing grease. What kind of Mobil 1 are you talking about. I might change my motor oil too, since I'm due.

I read some of the past birf write-ups and it seems as though I need 2-3 tubes of moly per axle. So I guess 6 in total, 3 qts of gear oil, 2 tubs of bearing grease and some brakekleen.

How much for this?

November sounds good.

I need to do the rear axle, which should be a fairly easy job. I'll probably be ready for my lift around then. Maybe you guys can help me put on my F.O.R. lift that I should get by then.

Mo - where is your buddy - I need to pick all this up after I get our books closed here at work and I'd rather support someone's friend than Pep Boys or Kragen.

I also have a 54mm socket but no brass drifts or fish scale. I can pick up the former at Sears w/o a problem.

I have a fish scale and a brass hammer

 No thankfully not in this one just attending.

Better PM me the address, I think I remember but it is not best to trust my brain at anything. ;p

You are correct, according to all literature I could find the Redline should be a great match for the birfs. I just figure I will be abel to get my Longfields sooner if I don't get the synthetic now. :D

Just so all know I will probably get a little break on the price but he doesn't make very much on fluids etc so with very little mark up there will be very little break. Also the Redline is about $12.50 for a 14 oz tub and the Sta-Lube Moly is about $4 a 14oz tub. I will call him and get all the stuff we need ordered in and pick it all up at once. I used 3 tubs of Redline and have about 1/2 left and 4 tubs of Sta-Lube Moly and have about 1/2 left. So I would reccomend getting 7 of the Redline so you are covered for sure and if you don't need to break into the 7th I will be happy to take it back for you so you won't be stuck with extra.

For motor oil I use Mobil 1 0-40 and a Wix filter (second best to OEM). I can get you some by the case or 7 quarts for one change. I can get you any viscosity you want to use. I like the Mobil 1 better for the motor and Redline for everything else. My .02

For gear oil the front axle takes 2.8 quarts and the rear takes 3.4 quarts. Unfortunately you do have to get 7 quarts to cover it all. I tried to sneak by with 6 when I changed both of mine and it didn't quite cover it. If you want to get the t-case too it takes 1.8 quarts so if you work carefully you could probably do all with 8 quarts. FWIW

I like really clean and use a boat load of Brakleen as it leaves no residue but you could do it alot cheaper with degreaser. Whichever you prefer. I would also reccomend a couple of boxes of gloves, you will use many more than you think you will.

That all being said, please post up again for me an exact quantity of each thing you want and I will keep a tally.

Brent same goes for you above. I can pick it all up and save you a trip. I want to make sure he has enough in stock so I will call him and have him order it up. It comes in same day. If you really want to go get it yourself you are welcome to it is Baum's Auto Supply. They are in Mission Viejo on Marguerite across the parking lot from the bowling alley inbetween Oso and La Paz.

I have a fish scale, brass drift, and Hub socket I will bring.

Same offer goes to anyone who wants it. Pm me or post up an exact list and I will get it for you.

I can't believe you have any pennys left after all of your mods Dave! :flipoff2:

I have the hub socket, brass drifts, fish scale, floor jack, 2 jack stands, some drain pans, FSM. . .

You're all welcome to borrow if you like.

7 tubes of Redline CV-2 (for wheel bearings and knuckle)
3 qts of Redline 75w-90 gear oil
1 box of gloves
whatever amount of brakekleen you think I need

Just tally it up and I'll bring the cash on Saturday.

I all truthfulness its a wast of $$$ too use redline on the birfs, i would use cheep molly and redline on the trunnion bearings. I would get 1 tube to pack the bearings thats it. But its your truck and you money.

Had the front and rear diff oil changed about 5K ago. Any need, outside the obvious contamination to redo along with the birf job? No indications that I've got issues.

Okay, I got you down and it is ordered 7 tubs Redline grease, 3 quarts of Redline gear oil and 7 cans of Brakleen (same quantity Brent is getting). You will have to come up with the box of gloves though. I think they have some at Costco or a good hardware store. If anyone else knows a good place to get some speak up.

Harbor Freight has boxes of 100 gloves for around $8 if you are passing thru Westminster today or tomorrow. I do believe Costco does have them as well as Home Despot.

10 cans of brake cleaner and just to be safe get 4 qts Mobil 1 75w-90 well, I use Mobil 1 gear oil 75w- 90 and also bring 5 or 6 rolls blue paper towels.

Pic 1- From JDM website.
Pic 2& 3- Mine, I did it 2 years ago.

Hopefully I be able to come, let see how long does it takes for me to replace all the power steering pump, cooler and hoses and also I need to replace the antenna motor.

If I still have time and not too late (not too dark), I would like to help.

Also wanted to add that there is a coin op car wash a couple of blocks away - if one is inclined to blast off all the crud before begining.

See you in the morning!

O.K. It is 1:10 Sunday morning - Brent and Mark just left.
Too tired to download pictures, I'll post later.
