Couple of us are thinking of fabbing up a bumper and need some steel.
I got my slider steel from BMG in Chesapeake. But I had to buy a full stick.

Does anyone know anywhere/anyone that would sell smaller pieces in this area?

I'm thinking probably some 3/16 2X6 and 2x4 rect tube. Also some 3/16 plate, maybe some 1/2 in plate for tow points.

J&R enterprise is where I buy my stuff
this is the place

I would call them and see if they have what you want first.

They will charge extra for cuts if you don't want the 20 footers. They usally have some that all ready have been cut and I usally get them if they are there.

It's not easy to go there the first time. You have to go in the gated area to the left towards the weight scale, and park on the far side of the building on the right close to the weight scale go in and it's the desk on the right not the glassed in area. They have new and used metal. They will send you to another spot on the yard to get it then you have to come back and pay. The spot is over on the other side of the scales where there is a bunch of tubes.

BMG is where I got my steel from too. Would you mind helping me finish my home fab sliders? All I need is to weld the outriggers to the mounting plate/bracket then to the step sliders. I'll get some pizza and :grinpimp:

I would be glad to help out, also Josh wants to do a bumper.
I have a 110V MIG from Northern tool which worked OK for the 3/16 sliders. It is supposed to do 1/4inch.
I also have the tank of shielding gas for smaller work.

My skills are "beginner". But I am happy with the slider job.
Maybe the 3 of us can get together. I should be free this weekend.

Josh, Noel,

I'm thinking of mocking up some taller shackles to "test fit" before ordering real ones.
I think I can cut the 3/16 or 1/4 plate with the cutoff wheel but need to be able to drill some holes with precision.
Do either of you have a drill press? or ideas?

I plan to cut the plates to approx the MAF 4+ shackels, then used the Pins from my existing OME shackles.

Thanks
Dave

David,

I do not have a drill press but I know where we can use one. Do you have an air compressor with die grinder/cut off wheel? I would like to cut the rear axle to accommodate the actuator so I can install the locking third member.

I do have a compressor and cut-off but I always use the 4 1/2 elec angle grinder with a cutoff wheel because the compressor cannot keep up.

I can lend you my litte drill press if you need it. It's a table top type pretty small but probably perfect for shackles.

Thanks a lot Wes, I may take you up on that.
I have to find some steel 1st.

Cool, I just grabbed a 12x12 1/4" plate from LOWE$ to build my test shackles.
May get started on it tonight.

Let me know when you want to get together and do some weld-in. You too. Noel.
