Does anyone have a part number for a good quality aftermarket shock absorber to replace the original version on my 1990 LJ78? I need a number that will allow me to cross reference here in the States. Thanks for the help............1978HJ45

better yet, take old shock off and measure full compression. measure full extension when tire is lifted off the ground.
then go by rancho 9000 to install by those measurements.
done.

<and here i thought you were going to post "i installed the pyro as Wayne suggested and now the head cracked>

Why on earth would you think the head would ever crack on my 2L-TE. There you go again seeing the glass half empty. I will check tomorrow to see if the Rancho shocks are available locally.
Thanks for the tip..............................1978HJ45

hi ,you can check with ARBUSA & let them know your model is LJ78 landcruiser prado. for overheating issues, reason #1 radiator must be in good working condition. # make sure the vicious coupling fan is oil with toyota geniune silicone oil,it normally takes up to 5 tubes,# 3 make sure the lower rad hose is ingood shape(do not collapes under high reves) thermostates must be factory geniune parts.coolant are toyota red coolant.that all it takes to run this beast as long as you want.i got mine LJ78 &fully sevices, from ATEB & have no issues driving 12 hrs up north back & forth so many times with original head not touch at all.so pls tell anyone out there owning this 2lte engine follow the above mention items closelly. cheers have a nice day.

Thanks..............153,000 km's with no overheating or head issues so far. ......................1978HJ45

Here is the problem: Because the 70 Series was never sold in the U.S., when you order a Rancho 5000 or 9000 Series shock for a 1990 Land Cruiser it only fits the 1990 Land Cruiser that was sold in the U.S. that year which I assume is a 80 Series. The parts suppliers tell me they can find the proper shock if I can provide the part number ( thus the problem). I would appreciate any help that is available.......................1978HJ45
( Any information on a good quality shock would be ok....it does not have to be a Rancho)

hummm, i think you misunderstood my post.
you need to do a bit of leg work.
first get the measurements for all 4 shocks by the process i mentioned earlier. the back 2 are each different. the front are both the same.
then grab the rancho website and cross reference those dimentions and mounting bolt / stud size and that will give you the part number for each that you need.
cheers

Crushers I have to admit your post went right over my head and you can disregard the follow up email I sent you. I will talk to the garage in the morning...........Thanks, ....... 1978HJ45
This is perhaps the first conversation we have had that did not involve the potential explosion of my 2L-TE.

you want some good advice?
contact Dobinson out of Oz (or west coast cruisers in Cali) and order the complete 2 1/2" lift kit. that kit is the best lift i have ever run on ANY vehicle, smooth ride, looks great and it allows you to run up to 36" tractor tires or 31s and both look proper. best bang for the buck hands down.
no other kit even comes close.

Finally found what I needed and it is compatable with my Rancho lift kit......ARB part numbers N77 and N79...............1978HJ45

What were the details of the rancho lift kit you used?

Pete
Really wish I could help you but the Rancho lift kit was installed by the previous owner. If I recall, it was a 33mm lift but I could be off on that also. I can tell you that it looks good on the LJ78.
(about the right amount of lift in my opinion) I can photograph the lift and forward it to you if that helps. ......1978HJ45

Another quick request....what is the distance from ground to underside of wheelarch (using the hub as the line to measure)?

I've got 84mm on oem springs/shocks, trying to picture what a 45mm or so lift looks like is hard as that 45mm is from the standard position, whereas mine has sagged.

Cheers

I will be home tomorrow (Saturday)) and will forward the measurements at that time. From what I remember my LJ78 has a 33mm lift. .........1978HJ45

From the hub center to the bottom of fender opening = 20"
(both front and center). Sorry, us dumb Americans never learned to do metric conversions ( at least not in the early 60's)
Hope that helps...........1978HJ45
