Hi guys

I recently went on a weekend trip and found on some steep hills my brakes were overheating, to over come it I just selected gear 2 with the automatic to give me some engine braking.

Is this normal for a LJ78? I do find some times it feels like the gearbox is still pushing me on a bit when I’m slowing down, again is this normal as my LJ70 is manual with tonnes of engine braking.

Any recommendations on brake upgrades?

That's not normal. I tow a 1600kg trailer with my LJ78 (around 2500kg). Almost 4100kg total. Even with the automatic transmission in 3rd gear on the highway, the engine compression will keep me at 80km/h going down an 8% grade. I never have brake problems with it.

I suggest making sure your brakes are well serviced. It's common for pistons in the rear calipers to sieze. Make sure your brake proportioning valve is working/set right. Do a transmission flush? Is the motor running right?

I tow a lot of heavy stuff as well and never had any issue with the brakes, I find they work really good, hard pressed to improve over 4 pot front calipers
I only get a little shudder through them if I hit a long steep downhill but they still work good and never smell of burning
