Hi all,

I'm looking at buying a 70 series short wheel base vehicle purely for the function of pushing and pulling my boat trailer inside my land by the lake. Also to go into town and bring barrels of fuel for the boat.

I don't need it to tow the trailer and boat on the roads as I have my UZJ100 for that.

The vehicles I am looking at, are the 70 series with either the fabric rear top or the fiber top.

I can find them in either LJ (coils sprung all around ?) or BJ Leaf sprung ? models.

The dry weight of the boat is 6800 lbs. I'm don't need to move it far. Just to move it from my boat shed at the back, to the slipway by the lake and back again.

I will need to convert it to automatic transmission. Makes it easier to launch and retrieve the boat.

What are my Diesel engine options with 4x4 auto box ? ? (I cant convert to Petrol as the law prohibits it)

Since the LJ70 is originally fitted with the 2L engine, will it be easiest to use a 3LT with auto box from a surf ?

Other than for the suspension, what are the differences between the LJ and BJ ?
I read online that the BJ used heavy duty Land Cruiser engine, gearbox and diffs where as the LJ used the lower duty Hilux running gear.

Does this have a big bearing for my application ?

Does the LJ have a better turning circle than the BJ ?

The Bj70 (HD cruiser) will stand up to more abuse, as far as yanking a 6000 lb boat in and out of the water, but may be harder to find in an automatic.
The LJ70 would struggle pulling a 6000lb boat out, I would think, even in low range, but may be easier to find in an auto. I would try to find a BJ mode lwith an auto as it has the larger engine to pull the weight and the heavier leaf springs wont sag as much under the weight of towing a boat out of the water.

good luck!

Thanks for that.

All of the short wheel base soft top cruisers available here are ex military and they have been bought at auction by individuals who have either done them up or are selling them parts done.

The vehicles were all originally manual. The auto ones available are ones where people have converted them to auto by installing engine and gearbox from imported half cuts.

What were the diesel engines available in the BJ and LJ series ? the ones which were available with auto gearboxes ?

Well the LJ series would have an L series motor (2L, 2LT, 2LTE, 3L) and they are all fairly underpowered and problematic in stock configuration. A little modification and they are ok.

BJ series HJ series, PZ and HZ series all have the larger, more powerful and reliable diesel engines (3B, 13BT, 2H, 12HT, 1HZ, 1HDT) though I believe the 1HDT only came in an 80 series?

These engines would be a better choice for yanking stuff around. Unless you drive the LJ in low range all the time, I would think youd be cooking the tranny and really working the motor pulling heavy things out of a lake....
Which ones came with an auto I couldnt tell you off hand

#6000 boat. You're concern is pulling it up a ramp on a trailer, not trying to pull a sunk boat off the bottom, right?

any and all, regardless of engine/transmission/spring configuration is more than adequate. at low rpm, there's more torque than needed, even in the most feeble arrangement. There could be some consideration to load weight/ dead pull, but you're no where close to the margins, and if you wanted the extra margin, then use the UZJ, now there's some meaningful difference. Not saying the LJ is comparable to the BJ or FJ, just that you'd have more than you need with either.

Finding one with an automatic, now that could be a pis*er.

Thanks Chester, I too did think that even a 2L equipped LJ70 would be able to pull that boat on the trailer. I have an old LN107 with a 2L and that has pulled some weight so I had a feel of what it can do.

However, all the SWB 70s that came to Sri lanka came to the military and civilians got hold of them only after the military ruined them and then auctioned them off.

The LJ70 I am looking at, has had it's body restored with imported parts but the engine is tired and it does have a manual gearbox where as for my application, auto is best suited.

If I am going to do an engine and gearbox swap, I may as well go in for something better than go in for a 2L again. This is why I was thinking in terms of 3LT or 5L together with a 4x4 auto box.

I have extensive workshop facilities to carry out even serious mods and fabrication etc is not a problem if neede.

Just looking to find out of a 3LT or 5L can be mated to the surf autobox and that combination used in the LJ

Hi guys.. I hope to buy the LJ70 soon. It has 2L and 4 speed.
I need a 4x4 auto trans with low range.

What donor vehicle can I take the engine and trans from for this and what engine/trans combination ?

I'm new to these 70 series Land Cruisers, and what fits where is an unknown, but it appears to me that everything in the drive train on my LJ70 is sized like a 4 runner

ok so taking all things said into consideration, I have looked at a BJ73R-KR. It has been a soft top but has not got an FRP top on it.

It has been fitted with 1KZ and auto gearbox. I take it this is quite a powerful engine for this vehicle ?

Where can I find the fittings to convert it to soft top again ?

Powerful but useless uphill it will overheat.
