My friend borrowed my truck and promptly smacked the front bumper against a pole, leaving a nice dent.

Since he's now buying me a new bumper I might take the opportunity to upgrade to a metal bumper. I like my AHC so would want to stick with something light and aluminum.

Love the look of the Kavik bumper but as far as I can tell he no longer makes them. Any of you have an lx470 front bumper that you like?

If your buddy is paying the price to replace it with an aluminum bumper that's a good friend!

For the record my pressures were in spec with the stock torsion bars and a TJM T13 made of steel.

Aluminum: Hands down Dissent. Well gusseted and gorgeous.

Also worth noting/repeating that AHC can handle steel if you really want something that's only offered in steel. Aluminum is the better choice, IMO, but AHC doesn't preclude you from going the steel route if you want. The adjustments to t-bars made for either bumper material are identical and reliability differences should be negligible.

How would an aluminum bumper fair vs a deer at 70mph?
The bigger issue is how would the car fare? We hit a cow at around 80km/h (50mph) and while our steel (Ironman) bullbar seemed hardly damaged, the bar was actually damaged beyond repair. The crush cans had collapsed, which had the effect of preventing major transfer of stress onto the chassis and therefore the car was ok.

At 70mph impact, a steel or aluminium bar is going to be buggered - however any bar should also be considered in light of how it will protect the vehicle in areas you mightn't expect.

This is the bar in question. Looks ok - however the grille is cracked, the bonnet is slightly bent (both due to the bar being pushed in by the impact then rebounding slightly after) and you can see it's drooping along the front panel.

Go for a ausi made bumpers for the front of u care about impact from front end collision. Ausi made are tested and certified. Frame rail isn't stronger than most bumpers. Possible frame damage from even minor impacts.

Those crush cans a real deal.

I think it would behave fairly similar to that of its steel counterpart. Aluminum is more malleable than steel (on the same operating temperature), so initial contact and impact absorption in theory it should absorb kinetic energy effectively. Once it reached its bending/crumple limit, then the structural strength now goes to the strength of the frame of the Land Cruiser. If it’s a less dense mass like a deer, as physics demand the aluminum is still stronger than tissue mass so in theory it would hold up very well still at that rate of velocity.

Reading through this and have been thinking about a bumper for my LX. Everyone ehre says Dissent for aluminum and they look great. I cannt find the word aluminum ANYWHERE in the descriptions. It does however say lightweight even in steel. Am I missing something?

I believe the aluminum version of their front bumper is not always available. I think they build a set of x number of sure/paid orders first before they start to build one.
