lighter plug

Anyone else find it annoying that the lighter plug does not provide power when the key is not in the vehicle? Is there a way to fix this? My wife has her iPod charger plugged into the lighter plug, but forgets to turn her iPod off and it runs the iPod battery down when the vehicle is off.

I leave my Ipod pluged into the stock lighter plug and it powers it off when the key is turned off. I have however installed another always on plug under the dash on the passanger side for charging things when I am not driving.

Read this thread, if you want constant power don't tap into the 12v plug wire, run the wire to the fuse box, you can find constant power there.

Corey's writeup is great.
I prefer a seperate "system" for adding electrical. This way your stock electrics are not touched and potential electrical issues are avoided. Also makes it easier to diagnose future issues if they arise, and create a "beefier" aux. power source w/o dealing w/ OEM wiring.

more:
There is a rubber grommet on the driver's side firewall (green) that you can cut a 'nipple' off and feed wires thru for a clean install.

Use a relatively thick wire (like 10g) from the battery + post. USE A FUSE (15A) or Fusebox as close to the battery as possible. A long, unfused line is potential fire hazard. Thicker wire helps prevent this, as does the fuse.

You can place the fusebox anywhere you like: under dash, under seat, firewall, enginebay, etc, etc

Adding a fusebox is very convienent b/c as you add other accessories, you simply add a fuse and wire to the new fusebox instead of having a bunch of wires & seperate fuses coming off your battery.

Also check the outfitting section of the forum and search for fuseboxes, adding outlets, etc. There is a ton of great links and various setups. They are on different Cruisers but directly applicable in this case-

Another thing I should mention is to find a better box than the type I used.
Although I never had a problem with it, the taps are exposed.

There are better (more $$$ too) marine grade boxes with plastic covers to protect from water splashing on the aux box.

There is a good electrical company that has a catalog you can order to see all kinds of boxes.
On their site is a PDF file, but having the real catalog is better.

I forget the name of the outfit, but it is listed elsewhere, and I can find it later.

I will have to look at your links in the Outfitting area too.
I do have a spare aux box like the one I put on the 4Runner, but I would prefer to get one of the closed ones.

I can not tell from your battery pics, but you do have a 30 amp inline fuse within 18" of the battery?
If not, you should put one in right away.

There is one there between the battery and the relay/fuse box. I tucked it in there to keep everything looking clean. I know its not that easy to check but it looks clean.
