Hi All:

I'm sold on replacing my TDI Touareg with a GX460. I previously had a lifted Jeep JKUR with 35"s which I loved but I was constantly worried about parking garages as I (pre-covid) traveled a lot in the city for client meetings and often parked in 2-3 parking garages a day. I did some searching but can't get a positive answer. I'm planning to either level the 460 and put on a set of TRD wheels and 275/70R17 BFGs or do a 2" suspension lift. I would like to run an ARB/Ironman style bumper with a winch but would like to have it sit level. I will also need roof rack bars but may eventually want a more comprehensive rack for a RTT. Can anyone provide guidance on garage clearance with this setup? Unfortunately, my work garage is 6'7" so I'll have to manage to that height.

I can’t say for sure, but with a 6’7” garage, 2+” leveling lift...it might fit but it’s going to be damn close, probably 2-3” of clearance depending on the leveling kit.

My rig, with 2.5” lift on all four corners (actually more like a 3” in reality) 285/70R17s and roof rack, is 6’8” or so (not counting the MaxTrax). I’m not sure how much my roof rack sticks off roof line compared to factory bars, maybe a inch or so more vertical if anything?

Add a RTT and it’s a definite no go. 6’7” is a short parking garage. I’ve driven into a few near ~7’ structures and been real nervous looking at it.

You will be close. I don't remember my garage door height. 2.5" of lift.

Thanks for this. 100% agree about the RTT wasn't even considering it. I can't even fit my Touareg and my Thule Atlantis 2100 in my work garage... pathetic.

You guys have garages?

I’m 6’4” and with my 2” lift and only the factory “rack” my gx is at least a few inches taller than me. Sounds like it’s time to make your garage door taller. Might as well make room for a rtt while you’re at it.

I routinely travel to and from NYC for work and utilize parking garages. I'm lifted 2" and had no trouble parking even in the tightest NY garages. Early this year I installed the Victory4x4 rack... since then ive had difficulty finding a garage that will take me. It's usually up to the discretion of the parking garage attendant. Once they see an aftermarket rack they assume your above the allowable height and will turn you away. If you throw the guy a few bucks, they will usually let you park at the entrance.
Good luck

Prior to your victory rack, did you have other crossbars on your GX? I just looked at the victory rack and they say it adds 2.5" to the height. I can't imagine the factory bars being much less than that. Any idea what your clearance height is?

I had factory crossbars. The victory rack has some adjustment. I keep it at the lowest adjustment which sits about 2.5" above the roof.

That would be great if you wouldn't mind.

Highest point I could measure my bare roof line was 76.25”, just behind the rear axle. Factory roof rail runners measured at 1” to 1 1/8” tall.

So stock roof line with no rack, 2.5-3” lift and 285/70/17s put me at 77 3/8” aka about 1.5” of clearance in your work garage.

The top edge of my Gamiviti rack sits 3” above roofline in the rear, or 2” higher than the factory roof rails giving an overall height of 79.25”.

285/70/17's, Ironman FCP's set to 2.75" front and 2.5" rear, Rhino Rack with Backbone side rails, measured two inches behind rear axle center comes to 78 3/8".
