A friend and I put a 3+ Downey off road lift on the fj today. It was an adjustable coil lift. It took about 3 hours and was pretty easy. We did it in the garage. I didnt have time for install pics but heres the results. Also put Cooper discoverer stt tires on. 285 70 17

Nice work, beautiful rig!

Looks great....my FJC is Silver also, so you just gave me a perfect visual....I am going to have to do the same thing.

When you say "pretty easy"....is that for any schmo like me or do either you or your friend have mechanical experience. Any special tools needed not found in a normal Guy's garage? I am a good Bicycle mechanic, but I have very limited experience working on anything other than old Mustangs with 289s, and have never done suspension work.

I am asking because the lifts I am looking at are not that expensive, but the installation is as much if not more that the parts. The Old Man Emu Kit was $750 and another $750 for installation. The RevTek was $500 and $400 for intallation.

What does that do to the warranty?

Funny it takes a 3 inch lift to fit a 285 tire on those things when my 80 could fit that size tire stock.

Back in 84 I worked as a service advisor at the Chevy Dealer in Gunnison Colorado. A guy lifted his brand new Blazer and put big assed tires on it. anyway, he fried the clutch and brought it in for warranty work. I ,We , Chevy voided his warranty because of the design modification and it's adverse effect it had on the drivetrain. He was Pissed. Oh well, it was in his warranty disclaimer. Might be in yours too.

The most recent Toyota Trails add includes a statement from Toyota (paraphrasing) that, since FJC shares so many suspension components with the LCPrado and current 4Runner, many lifts/suspension components are already available aftermarket.

The disclaimer follows explaining that some modifications may not be covered by warranty. I'd want to research it before voiding it.

I haven't seen any mention of a 3" suspension + 3" body lift to fit 35s...that combo, with spacers or custom b/s wheels to widen would be one way to go.

Tools needed for install were just common tools two floor jacks and stands, pry bars,bf hammer. As for voiding the warranty. I havent had anything go wrong with a toyota while on warranty.
Most of the problems come from me abusing the equipment. Those problems are usually external and easily fixable. If I have motor or electrical problems they shouldnt be associated with a lift kit.

I have 285s on mine without a lift. No problems, tiny bit of rubbing on plastic where that stupid body mount is. Trimmed the plastic, no rubbing at all now. Will trim the body mount next, then I will have enough room to run tire chains.

Don't get me wrong, the FJ cruiser is starting to grow on me a little. ;p perhaps in a few years i may buck-up and get one, but for now I'm just in love with my 80.

Im not sure you can chain up the front. The a arm is within an inch of the sidewall. The chains will have to be cable type or somthin pretty cheesy. Offset rims might solve that but your ride sacrifises

Funny how my completely stock (and much smaller than an 80) FJC has 285 70 17 BFG Muds with zero rubbing.
