I had the front drive shaft out of my 80 for a few tanks, and I figured it worked to about 2mpg as well. I was getting a Taco rear double carden shaft re-tubed to look after vibes on the front.
Older u-joints sometimes do not appreciate increased range of motion even if your angles are correct. Have you used a protractor/angle finder to ensure the pinion faces are on the same angle?

id like to have adj panhards..as it looks kinda wonky with offset axles. she still tracks pretty straight though, and vibe free on 315's with spacers. did you contact maf on how to center axles? i recall reading a thread in the 80s forum not too long ago on how to...
