Well, today I climbed under the GX to swap out inner and outer tie rods. I had previously gotten the wheels up off of the ground and tested everything and found movement in the steering. I climb under and notice a little seep through on the boots. I then unclip the boot and pull it back to reveal some leakage from the steering rack. With the boot back I had the wife 3 and 9 the wheel for me and all of the movement was in the rack. This coupled with the leakage, coupled with the shakes during braking make me think its going to need some service in the not to distant future. Here's the questions ...

1) who's rebuilt their rack ? Toyota sells the kit, and I have the part number for all of the seals. Is there supposed to be movement in these ? I've never had one apart and don't know if they have a bushing in there that wears down and allows for the play I'm seeing or if that's just normal.

2) since I have the feeling most people on here haven't rebuilt one, what brands have you used for replacement ? Also, what have been your experience's with those brands ?

If the rack itself is moving a lot it is likely the bushings. The leaks are obviously rebuild time. I believe CVJ has a good reputation for reman.

Yes! OEM and poly are available. Just look for 4th gen 4Runner.
