Just purchased this guy today. This is my first LC and I'm looking for recommendations on the best mods.

What's that thing hanging from your frame rail? 😮

New user here; I'm going to hijack this thread a bit, because I have the same Qs :)

My parents have an '01 LX470 w/ ~160k miles and have been the primary owners for most of its life. I've been dreaming for the past decade about hijacking the truck (like this thread) and kitting it out a bit.

My usage will be fairly basic compared to most of you...mostly highway/city driving with some (let's say 10%?) light overland style offroading (e.g., Assateague island's OSV trail). Given this, I'm thinking about keeping the Michelin Defender tires that are currently on it (recently replaced).

I'm thinking about starting off w/ some basics:
At the moment, I have no plans to add (active) refrigeration or drawers. I'll probably add a waterport (or similar), a cooler, etc when needed.

One big question I keep coming back to - given the added constant weight (and obviously additional gear when overlanding), can I keep the AHC, or should I replace with a trad suspension (shop suggested a Dobinson's 1.5-2" IMS lift kit)? I've poked around the forum a bit, and I've seen people recommend both options. I don't want to really lift the truck beyond the stock level, I just want to counteract added constant weight.

Considering the stock ride is very comfortable with the AHC (I've described it as a couch on wheels), will a trad suspension degrade the ride comfort? And if so, by how much? From a service perspective, what is the longevity of the AHC system?

Yes. By how much is subjective, but it will be stiffer/rougher.

Keep AHC, but service and modify it. Plenty of threads here documenting what to do to carry heavier loads with AHC.

Thanks for input. I'm gonna throw 5k at her.
My plan is painting lower half of body to match bronze rims I pick out. I really like the darker bronze from fuel but opens to options. Not looking for deep set rims want a more off road look. Staying with 18 inch since I already have 5 brand new dueller a/t. Btw, I have the original set of 5 rims and current tires if anyone is interested.

Tires rims and paint are not included in the 5k I want to spend. Looking for recommendations on the following.

Roof basket
Want to add spare on back of LC
Led light bar for basket
Lift kit, just want 2.5 inches
Hit me up with other ideas please!

I pulled the running boards off as soon as I got home. Removed the weight thingy below driver.
Pulled seats out today to refinish. Using SEM classic coat for leather and SEM color coat for carpet. Dont know how long it will last but I prepped it correctly and it seems legit. Here's a few pics
