Finaly after trying EVERYTHING to get some more light out of my 80, i think i have found something i like. I'm now runing 9005 -100watt in the high beams from rallylights.com, and have fitted a set of all weather 9005-100watts, into the low beams. to make the 9005's fit was a snap, filed down the top post, and than went to the local hardware store and picked up an o-ring with the same I.D. as the one that comes on a 9005, except got one with a larger wall thickness to compinsate for the 2mm diff between the 9005 and 9006 base. Bulb fits nice and snug like a 9006 would. Why the all weather low beams? thats what i had laying around to work with, i just ordered another set of the 9005 100watts from rally lights that i will tweak and drop in. In my opinion i love this setup and wouldn't go with anything else, and yes i have tried H.I.D's and multiple sets are sitting in a box with no hope of being used again. the main problem i had with the H.I.D's is that the light pattern was horrible, yes indeed they were bright, but what good is that if there not focused to where you need them.

Lighting has been discussed to death here, but if you look in the FAQ there is a thread about it.

Everyone here is really happy with HIR's. The 100 watt bulbs you got from rallylights, are they Hellas? If so, look forward to replacing them in a short time.

Did you over look at using HIR?? You'd probably find that they are just as bright or even brighter than the 100watt bulbs. Also I hope they are not the Korean made Hella bulbs, if so you'll find out soon enough.
I have tried the HIR's and i wasn't all that impressed with them. And as far as light output, i think i get more with this setup, plus the numbers stated by Cary in the faq section support it. "Low beam new: HIR2, 12.8V, 55W, 1875 lumens" vs. "9005(tweaked to 9006) 100 watt- 2540 Lumens" . Yes i know this topic has been killed, however after trying so many differnt routes, i thought it might be worthy to post up that putting a high watt 9005 into the low beams has worked out the best for me.

hudson,

Nice work!

Do you mean the real HID(High Intensity Discharge) or the halogen bulbs with a little injection of "Xenon" gas in them? With the horrible light pattern you described, I assume it's the real deal, but thought I'd ask anyway...

I know someone who was thinking about going HID with one of those kits. I could let him know if you are interested in parting with them and see if he's still interested.

Anyway, please keep us posted as to the longivity(sp) of those bulbs!

When the 100 watt 9005's blow out next week (they have a life expectancy of about 20 hours), replace them with 9011 HIR bulbs by modifying them the same way you did the 9005. You will have the same lumen output and the bulb will last 300 hours.

BTW, you need to be very careful, the stock wiring is not designed for this type of load and you run the risk of damageing it. A wiring harness upgrade is required. Second, the 100watt lamps put out a lot of heat and may damage the housings. Two of the major advantages of HIR bulbs (besides light output and long life) are they have my lower heat output and current draw than overwatt bulbs.

Thats true statement, it happened to me 7 years ago  I wish i had the pic
i can show you how ugly when the factory harness melts.

Sorry i forgot to mention, i have Slee's harness.

Glad to hear you have the harness. Now I can sleep knowing that there won't be a post in a few days asking how to fix a burned up harness.

I knew you couldn't mention "light" and not have cary butt in!

Note: If you need to get in touch with cary, say something like "100w Korean made Hella halogen replacement bulbs rock even w/o upgrade harness!" or "HID replacement kits are totally legal and they rule!", you would get his attention in no time. :flipoff2: j/k

Mot ;)

Is the upgraded wiring harness necessary for the HIR's? My guess is no.

No, because the HIR's use require the same wattage as the stock bulbs.

The harness will help the lights get full energy, though, but are not required.
