Still working on cleaning and painting parts.

Got the axles blasted this weekend. I just have to blast and paint a few more thing before I can start putting the chassis together.

nice!!!so you are ready to put a rolling chassis together kewl!!

Well yesterday I decieded to get some things together to blast today. Well I figured that I would clean up the u-bolt plates. Well as luck would have it they were either cracked, bent to hell or a combination of both. I had a couple of FJ60 and FJ62 spring plates but no two matched the rear. So I think that I might end up going with the 4+ u-bolt flip.

Todays progress:
Blasted the bumper.
Blasted and painted the bellhousing.

Got the Alcan's installed today. The front looks good but the rear was giving me a problem. First off it seems like I am going to need to run a 3" over stock shackle in the rear and they will need to push the axle back 1.5" to be able to run rear shocks. Also the cast spring hangars in the front of the rear spring seem to be bent inward a little. I didn't want to try to bend them back for fear of cracking them. Is it okay to run them like that. There is maybe a 1/8" or 3"/16 gap.

Thanks Fox I'll do that. I sent an email to Charles of Alcan to see what he can do.

Started a little metal work. For some reason the previous owner rivited a flange with a screw cap to the top. I drilled out the rivits and made a patch panel. This will be my first attempt at sheet metal work.

Pretty common for those u bolt plates to break, I've done it. FJ 40 plates should fit, but they don't cradle the leaves like the originals, so the leaf springs can splay and twist, so I've been told.

Jason,

When you start welding the sheet metal patch keep a wet rag and a pump spray bottle of water and keep the surface cool after every weld. If you take your time and don't rush you will get very little warpage. If you feel rushed walk away. The weld should lay flat.It should sound like sizzling bacon.(yum) The better you fit the piece the easier welding will be.

How's it going Jason?
