Ok, so i finally got my factory service manuals and decided to do a lean drop on my 60. First of all, what a difference!!!!!! i couldn't believe how much better the truck idled. so smooth i had to check that it was actually running. it was always rough before.

here's my question. i think i may have gone a little too far with the idle mixture screw behind the carb. with cold starts in the morning, i get some loud exhaust noise. loud quick sputtering sounds. this will also happen when i'm driving and i shift gears. for example: i'll be at a stop sign just after i've started the truck in the morning. i shift into first and hit the gas, when i let off the gas and shift into second, there's a loud sputtering noise. this all goes away after the truck has warmed up. am i running it too rich?

my 82 fj40 does the same sometimes untill warm, normaly shift 1-2 I get a little POP, my 60 doesnt

If you were running too rich you would get a puff of black smoke out the exhaust while shifting. I think your problem might be caused by being too lean. Trying riching just a smidgen and see if it goes away. Either that or something in your fuel cut system is possibly on its way out.

the fuel cut selenoid is grounded out. Is there anything else I can check?

With the key in the "on" position, can you here the solenoid click when you disconnect the plug and hook it back up.

Is your air pump and air management system still installed and connected? You may be experiencing "afterburn" where unburnt engine gases are ignited by an air source. It's not supposed to happen, so if your air system is still installed, a switching circuit component has probably failed.
