Hello all,

The sun roof (electric, sliding) in our trusty 92 FJ80 has started suddenly to leak.

I assume I should just replace the big rubber seal around the thing, yes?

Is there something else I should try first?

Thanks in advance, my wife is freakin out and is starting her "I want a suburban rant". I must fix this soon!

Thanks,

Bill Black

I posted first then I searched. Doh. There's plenty of info out there for me, (about the sun roof that is, the "mad wife" I'm afraid I'm on my own).

If she wins, I'll post the cruiser here first for sale!

Thanks,

Bill

I just went through this myself. In NY we've had a ton of rain and it's really testing my 10yr old gaskets. The seal around the glass can't be replaced w/o replacing the glass. I started by cleaning all of the drain tube. The most effective solution for me was after determining that the rains were clear was to lube the sunroof gasket with vaseline. I've been doing it once a week for 3 weeks and for some reason it worked. Do a search on sunroof leaks, you'll find the answer to your problem.

Your wife is mad. If she wants a Suburban you’ll have a few more problems than a leaky sunroof.

Weld it shut, get a suburban...whatever it takes.....Mad wives are not to be fooled with...

Most likely on an older vehicle, its a worn out seal or worn out rails which need to be replaced.. This is not inexpensive. Also make sure the drains are clear, this is easy. My drains are clear, I've replaced the glass/seal, still leaks. Next is the rail system. I would never want a burb over a cruiser. If I could weld the thing shut I would. We are looking at replacing the rails, but I've decided my next mod is to rip out the carpet and line-x the floor (all of it). I'm tired of the carpet.

Blow some compressed air into the drainage tubes...they're likely clogged with dirt.

Have you considered DIVORCE?

Then clear the drains or check them anyway if that does not work have the glass and seal replaced and the rails and it should be good as new.

It is like 12 years old this stuff is bound to happen if it were a Domestic truck it would have many more problems than that.

or let here get here pice of s*** suburban and when it breaks down just remined here that she wanted the f'ing thing ......deal with it.

If all the other suggestions fail you can try siliconing shut before welding.

weed eater ""string"" the drain holes.....run about 4 foot of weed eater string down the holes then test by pouring water and looking under for draining out of the bottom of the vehicle.
....worked for me.
