after a rough couple of outings my 60 has developed a leak at the front of the rear dif, on the backside of the u-joint. question #1-what is the seal called? question #2-how many bananas? any help from you gurus would be greatly appreciated.

It is called a Pinion seal.I changed about 6or 7 in the last 15yrs on my cruiser. there cheep and easy to replace.Do the front at the same time then yoy have a spare
just got my seal from c-dan with the ih8mud dicount

And readup on how to set the preload on the pinion nut. You 'll need that for re-assembly. Beginners use a torque wrench, pro's do it by feel.

what's the recommended oil to refill with?
I don't have the FSM's in front of me, but my (o)pinion is 75w-90 for front and heavier for rear. 80w-90 ?

you can use 80w90 on both. same goes for the tranny and transfer case.
Yup, and if you go with the same fluid ...
Get yourself a 5 gallon bucket of it and a small hand pump. Heck of a lot cheaper too.

Don't forget to stake the pinion nut.

I dug up this old metal siphon pump I had and now it travels with my Cruiser !!!

Francis stripped the stop lights off the overhanging wires @ intersections. This is now my definition for a *bad* storm.
