I am in the market for a new vehicle. I was pretty much set on on a used 100. My wife was looking at the Sequoia but found it too big for daily use and ended up with an MDX. MDX - nice car - good for the wife. The dealer let us take the Sequoia Ltd. over night. The engine is pretty nice and it rides well too. I liked the space it offered. Now I am between the LC and Sequoia. Does anyone know how the Sequoia will do offroad. I do not mean hardcore rock climbing. We have a camp that is pretty hard to get to in the winter. My wife's old XC90 (POS) even with winter tires could not get there on hard pack. You definately need chains. Our boat ramp also can get pretty muddy (and is a little steep). I do have a Chevy 2500HD with 8.1 ltr motor and Cooper Discover ST on which works pretty well for that. But if I could use the Sequoia all around then it would be much easier. Any input would help.

If you can drive a 2500hd Chevy longbed up there, then the Sequoias size wont be much of a hassel. The Part time 4WD in the Sequoia is also a plus when you wont need it for better fuel economy and its extra room and huge seats make for a relaxing drive.

The LandCruiser has outstanding view outward. The narrow pillars, high seating position, low dash and hood make navigating a trail a piece of cake. The LandCruiser is bumpier than the Sequoia ofcourse and its lighter, but the Sequoia packs the punch.

The cons of buying a LandCruiser money-wise, a pro for me, is that you will find that the trails you take aren't challenging enough and want to push it to the limits. Before you know it, you'll be traveling a different path instead of that trail you always take, and you'll have an urge to mod it with bumpers, winch, lift, tires..etc.

Hell with it, buy the LandCruiser ;)

The new Sequoias are nice, have a lot of power and lots of room, but the Land Cruiser is a totally different beast. If you have issues getting to your camp in the winter, you won't anymore with the LC. I test drove a Sequoia (older) before I got my LC and the drive experience for me was night and day. The LC felt so much more solid and stable on the road than anything I had previously driven - even passengers can feel the difference. Capability - you've got it all w/ the LC, and once you do take that trail you're not used to taking, I think you'll get hooked.

Plus, I say the Land Cruiser is classier than the Sequoia.

The 100 is the most solid feeling vehicle I have ever driven. Reminds me of the 83 benz my dad had way back in 83. Carved out of one piece of steel. Others try but have not suceeded. The 100 is rock solid.

The LandCruiser is bumpier than the Sequoia of course and its lighter, but the Sequoia packs the punch.

I think the 100 is heavier than the new Sequoia. Edmunds says that the curb weight of the Sequoia is 6045lbs. I am fairly certain that the 100 is closer to 7000lbs.

I guess when the chassis is made out of girders, it tends to be heavier than most other vehicles, even the larger ones with more payload. :confused:

As stated above, the Cruiser is a totally different animal. It is the difference between a world car (bought by the thousands by government agencies for use where getting stuck sometimes is a death sentence) and something produced for the loads of people in the US that drive on smooth roads with an AAA card in their wallet.

This is a good question. I assume you are speaking of the 08 Sequoia. I am 6'4" which makes the Sequoia tempting but I live in Mexico and the roads plain suck! So the Tundra puts down 385hp+super charger for somewhere around 504hp:hillbilly: Not much not to like about that. For me the thing is the Sequoia is made in the U.S. while the LC is still produced in Japan. I bought my wife an 06 MDX as well...New and it does everything well. I have not driven the newest version of the Sequoia but on the 06 there just isn't the solid LC feel....... You can also add dual arb lockers in the LC for more traction when headed to the cabin. For me more than likely the LC will be it. A few years down the road I think you will be happier with LC. Good Luck

My wife did get the '08 MDX. And I do mean an '08 Sequoia. I do like the LC more but the extra room of the Sequoia and the engine is what makes it difficult. From what I gather, I guess most people feel as though the Sequoia won't last as long as an LC either. Tough choice.

The new Sequoias were looking pretty tempting here a few months ago. They had zero interest for 3 years and $9000 off of MSRP. If you go to Toyota.com and punch in different zip codes you can see the different deals offered in different regions. It could be worth a trip for a better deal.

Curb weights:

a) 100--> 5,390 lbs

b) 200--> 5,690 lbs

c) '08 Sequoia--> 6,045 lbs

GVWR :

a) 100--> 6,860 lbs

b) 200--> 7,275 lbs

c) '08 Sequoia--> 7,300 lbs

:cheers:

I have both a 2006 LC and a 2007 Sequoia. Frankly the Sequoia drives nearly as well as the LC. The Sequoia may be just a little less polished over bumps, but it actually feels like it has slightly better acceleration (don't know if this is objectively true, but it feels like it). For hauling kids to soccer games and light offroading I think the Sequoia is a better value - maybe even a better outright car independent of price. For true offroading or bad weather conditions (i.e., more than just a dirt road or driving on wet pavement after the street sweeper comes through), the LC is clearly better equipped... but you pay for it. I haven't owned either long enough to comment on their relative reliability over the years, but by reputation I'd be surprised if either is anything but outstanding.

Buy a used Lexus LX470, get a certified preowned from a Lexus dealer with under 40K miles. You will then have a better warranty and better dealer service then with the LC/ Sequoia. You will also save some big $$$. I bought my latest 2004 LX470 with 37K miles and bought a Platiunm Lexus warranty and have with the warranty around $38K in the LX470 and it is like a new vehicle. If you do the samething you will save money get a higher quality vehicle and better service for many years of ownership. Buying new is a waste of money. I know since I bought a new SL550 and even with a $20K discount I know I am losing $1000 per month in dep. Good luck.
