I can't imagine that that rig would go for something under 15 -17K and then there's shipping from CALIFORNIA.... that's gotta hurt a bit. (At the moment) I don't think the VT rig is a bad deal for what you get. Yeah, it's gasoline/propane but let's face it, it's a very very good price. If I had the choice, I'd take a 12HT in the troopy w/ an H55 behind it :D

Now also, I don't really plan (yet) on buying another rig on ebay w/o knowing them, getting someone else to look at it or me looking at it. This guy is different (I'd think) b/c it's PVCruiser's rig. I've called them many times before and emailed them about different rigs ... no response.

We'll watch and see. I think the deal I'm working on is still ok for the price and what you get.

...agree? Speak up fawkers.

me!

Agree .. We're gonna get you a big *ss propane tank so you can haul us all to Sicily Island. :D

I must have missed something because I was unaware that you were working on something. I love to get advice and opinions because invariably, I get some information that wasn't aware of or considering. For me, until met you all, I usually purchased my vehicles based on current condition only. I never really considered potential much unless I was thinking about what the rig would look like with a lift, new tires, accessories and other bolt on items. My mechanical shortcomings have always limited me. That's why for as many vehicles as I have owned and for as long as I've been a self proclaimed cruiserhead, I still don't know a whole lot. My time and ability are so limited that I have never really turned a wrench on any rig I have owned aside from bolting on a bumper or brush guard. Anyway, it's a great thing for guys like me to have this club as a resource. Unfortunately, my views and opinions on vehicles will differ somewhat from you guys with the know-how so I don't really add much value there. I'll put it this way, unless you know my history of owning cruisers, you would think I was a "poser" because I still know so little.

Dude, your TLCA number proves your interest in the LC and for that alone you have my respect. Because I know you... you deserve it. You're an awesome guy. I know NOTHING about cruisers and love hearing everyone talk and spew information. You're hilarous and glad you're aboard. Wouldn't be the same w/o the freaking world traveler with us. Keep posting. I learn something new every single day.

:group hug: lol ok enough mushy crap....

It's a secret... but it likes propane as well :D

Nice thing about the gas engine is that its got more balls and parts availability too....which you need in a rig that weighs about what the 80 series does, cause w/the H, you have 90HP and 150ft*lb torque...versus 212HP/275ft-lb 1FZ-FE and 155/210 (2F). I think EFI adds considerable HP and Torque...if you compare same engines with and without EFI, you can see the difference. I can FEEL it, since I'm running it...its unbelievable...and the first thing Will said when I let him drive my rig was "throttle response". I guess what I'm saying is that the F engine is easier to work with, maintain, and with PROPANE and we can add EFI easily (I'll save the parts for you), you'll love it. Propane rocks! Anyway, I think the VT rig is quite a deal...

why is propane used exactly? is it stronger (more energy)? higher relative octane? do you run propane only, or like an injection system along with gasoline?

A good article, in short years back Exxon converted their fleet of Ford trucks to run propane at the time it was much cheaper and more fuel efficient to run propane with minimal conversion. The reason they stopped was the safety fact of the propane tank explosion in an accident. I know there are some Diesels that use propane as an additive for HP gains but in most applications I've see running around here including my tech school instructor ran on either or. I'm not sure on the cost savings as I don't usually pay attention when I fill the propane tanks but in the article below says its more cost effective on the propane. There are a few MUD members running propane on quite a few trail rigs you may do a search and see their opnion on it as well.

Some advantanges...

1. Clean
2. Boils at a lower temp and mixes w/ incoming air to burn more efficiently
3. Doesn't "go bad" for stored vehicles
4. No more starving carbs on inclines
5. Higher octane rating ~100 - 110 (I think) so extra "boost" w/o the turbo ..lol
6. Pressurized so no pumps floats etc..
8. Water tight
9. No flooding the engine
10. ? less painful on engine (plugs and oil, filters)
(Neg) - Some loss of power in the bi-fuel rigs... (remember higher octane in the propane only to help compensate).

----> More about propane than you want to know <----

Thanks for the kind words. You are right though - enough mushy! As for the propane rig, I do like most of what I have heard about the benefits. My main concern would be finding propane out on the trail or running down the highway if it's not a duel fuel vehicle. Not really a big deal, I think it would just require a bit more planning and preparation when going out for a ride. Outside of my business, I mostly fly by the seat of my pants so it probably wouldn't be a good choice for me.

There's some confusion on the way it is run...the thing to remember, is that if you Really want the benifit of propane (and IT DOESN'T WORK ON FUEL INJECTED RIGS...just carbs BTW), you have to advance your timing big time and leave it there and get your higher comp. pistons too I'd say...but if you run it and switch back and forth to gasoline, then you have to leave your timing and all that alone....else it'll knock like crazy when you switch to gas...

Interesting fact: the FJ40 that won the Baja race in '74 was mostly stock, but ran PROPANE.

Propane Injection is a totally different thing...that's using it to make diesel engines burn cleaner and more completely...(less black smoke when you floor it!)

Anyway, the benefits are there...pro's and con's to everything...
My aunt and uncle run Propane in their Suburban...have for last 7 years....

Some of you folks know my rig and it's a chevy big block 396cid running on propane. Probably the best mod for the money I ever did for a trail rig that won't see much (if any) road time. Tobascolo (and others) are right...major timing advance to work with that est. 110 octane. Higher compression would help boost power as well but isn't really "necessary". Fuel economy on my rig is just about the same on bbq gas as it was on pump gas - both sucked at about 7-8 for propane and about 8-9 for gas. Other big factor is that I can fill my tanks at home for less than $2 per gallon vs the price of pump gas these days. For a rig that is going to spend most of it's life on the street I wouldn't be able to strongly suggest it. For a rig that is going to see a lot of trail time - go for it!

Thanks for the info. I like that term BBQ gas and gives me ideas of the dual purpose boiling crawfish and BBQing on the trail. Nice

I know your rig well...remember it from the past and it was "camouflaged" in the back on the cover of the TLCA mag just time before this last if I recall (least I thought that was you).

Thanks for the propane tour! Great idea. I like the idea of having a hookup for crawfish too! (Coonass = "Southern Redneck).

BJ42

Armond and I have been talking about it, but we finally met up today and went to check out the BJ42. I felt as if we were visiting a horse in a stable...anyway, for reference, the tires are 37 x 12.50's. Of course it is sprung over, with my FAVORITE - the 3B diesel engine. The rig has been sitting for quite some time now, and it very dusty, but covered and out of the weather. Here are some pics we took:

Pretty awesome huh? Mike and I were drooling before we left. I'm staying close to the situation surounding the vehicle. Maybe one day it and its owner will be in the BSLCA!

Is the rig for sale?? Strange w/ km/hr and yet LHD. Maybe NZ rig? Costa Rica etc.. still use mph, yes?

Nice pics

Not at this time. The owners are very close friends of mine who are going throught the nastiest of divorces. Thus far, I have been able to remain friends with both. I am staying very close to the situation and will know if anything changes with respect to the rig. I'm sure it will be sold one of these days and I have been asked by both of the "owners" to assist with a sale. This rig and the family who own it came with my family when I went to Katemcy last year (during happier times for them). My buddy flew to Vancouver, bought the vehicle and drove it back to Louisiana a few months before in anticipation of us caravaning up to the Lone Star Land Cruiser Roundup. Even without a front driveshaft the vehicle performed well on the medium trails. The rig is truly a beauty and a beast.
