Guys
I have a 2004 LC 100 with a stock stereo system. The right front speaker blew and needs replacing. I call up the local Toyota Dealer to find out the replacement costs, and he quotes $369.00????

After hanging up, I was finally able to control my laughter and ask the serious question..... Are OEM speakers required or can I replace the speaker with an aftermarket speaker?

Aside from the funny price of the OEM speaker, I used to have a BMW 5-series with an "integrated speaker system" that did not allow an owner to use anything but the OEM speaker unles he/she was replacing the whole system

What is the story on a 2004 LC100?

Thanks

You should be able to find much better speakers from sites like Crutchfield. They even come with vehicle-specific instructions.

Come on, you really expected a better answer when calling the dealer?

Do some searches, there is tons of info. Yes you can replace them, but you have to match the ohm (8?) rating if my memory serves me correctly. The answers lie within the search.

Any standard or shallow depth 6.5 inch speakers will fit with very minor modification.

If you replace the pair (both front speakers at the same time), then do not worry about matching the impedence (ohms) to the factory speakers.

You can get a pair of very nice consumer grade 6.5 inch speakers for less than 100 bucks. 369 is outrageous, and the factory speakers suck anyhow.

If you are lazy, just go to your local car stereo shop or best buy and they should be able to install a new pair of front speakers for ~$150, installation included.

You will notice an improvement in sound quality over the factory speakers.

For that price, you could get a pair of Focal Performance 165 speakers! Ouch!

You can definitely get a pair of good quality speakers for less than that price.

There has been some discussion of 2 ohm vs 4 ohm speakers and which sound better - anyone have any info on that?

Sound better? Impedance isn't going to have anything to with with "sound better". Many modern amplifiers are running lower impedance outputs which give them more power with the lower impedance speaker - playing louder.

Has zero to do with audio quality, and purely to do with properly matching the speaker ohm rating to the amplifier ohm rating. Now with that said, you can have issues with poorly mismatched speakers and the sound being overly low volume, poor bass, etc which could be construed as "poor audio quality". Really it's poor application.

The point to take away is not all speakers and amps are created equal. Design the system with all the components in mind to work in harmony.

Thanks Anhony - seems like I recall someone recently having issues with the Polk 2 ohm speakers and it was suggested to use Infinity 4 ohm speakers. That being said a lot of people have used the Polks so I was really asking for first hand experience.

Speaker rebuild

I have a 2001, both fronts, surrounds were toast. Pulled them and took them to Northwestern Speaker in Smyrna Ga. $80.00 to rebuild both. They sound great. I did not want to spend much and the 2 ohm replacement was nowhere to be found. I love the JBL's.

The impedance thing is all about power transfer. If an amplifier is designed for a 2ohm speaker, it will deliver its rated output power to a 2 ohm speaker, and roughly a third less to a 4 ohm speaker.
