If you want a more OEM looking wiring install for the new alternator , with fuse protection, you can order a 81-87 alternator plug kit from me. It contains a plug to fit the new alternator, two female terminals for the plug, a small ring terminal, and a new B+ terminal boot. Then do the following:
At the firewall mounted regulator you will find three wires: WB(white/Black) which is GROUND, WG(WhiteGreen) which is the field wire for the OEM alternator and WR(White/Red) which is an ignition switched hot wire for the regulator. The WB and WG go to the alternator where they terminate in a three pin plug.
Remove the WR wire from the screw terminal and place it on top of the WG wire terminal so that both are under the same screw terminal. This disables the regulator and makes the WG wire a switched +12V wire at the alternator end. This wire is fused so if shorted out will not catch fire.
Cut the three pin connector off the end of the existing alternator wire. Separate out the WB wire and crimp a small ring terminal on to it. Put this ring terminal under a case screw on the NEW alternator that is grounded. (Do NOT put it on the B+ terminal!) Connect the large WL(White/Blue) wire to the B+ terminal on the new alternator. Crimp a female plug terminal onto the WG wire. Look at the back of the NEW alternator. You will see a two pin male plug. The female plug will only fit into the male plug one way. Plug the terminal with the WG wire into the BOTTOM of the female plug so that when it is plugged in to the alternator it will be in the terminal labeled IG on the alternator. That's it.
If you have always wanted an alternator idiot light then do this:
Get a small +12V indicator light. Mount it so you ca see it. Run two wires from the light to the back of the alternator. Connect one wire (Does not matter which) to the top terminal on the alternator plug using the included terminal. This terminal is labeled L on the alternator case. Connect the other wire to the WG wire which is +12V key switched. Now if the alternator fails to put out a charge it will ground the L terminal causing the lamp to light giving you time to repair/replace the alternator before your battery runs down.
