If I could, I would delete my oem flares.

Edit: I mean to say if I could easily. No weld or hole covering involved. Sadly that isn’t the case. It is a mess of brackets under those flares.

Spraying the space inside the fender flares with oil or WD-40 keeps rust away.

And yes, there are a lot of brackets to remove and a lot of holes to patch.

I don’t get mud up in there myself but I redid the flare seals awhile back and made it very easy to remove them now for easy cleaning. No more rivets. Only Toyota hardware bolts hold on the flares now.
 
Do you just not like the look or are you concerned with corrosion under them?

Sorry I didn’t mean to hijack the thread about flares but to answer the question, it is my concern about corrosion but thankfully there is none to be seen last time I took the flares off to install new rubber seals.
 
Actually on the 70 it's really not bad closing the holes for the flares. On the back side, the holes are visible from inside the panels. on the 73/74 they are really out there. So from a repair point of view, it's straigh forward. The fronts are not so visible. so for you guys living in wet climates, this will require extra effort to get the inside of the welds painted properly.

I do see mine becoming flareless in the future. Probably with the OEM softtop I'm collecting parts for.

I love this rig. Size, and power. It's just great!

Unfortunately on the 77 models, the flares are also on the rear side doors some, so the hole plugging would have to happen on those rear side doors as well.

If I could walk into a Toyota dealer right now and order a new 70 series, any model available. It would be just like your 74, diesel, soft top and without flares or snorkel.

Toyota never made a factory 73/74 soft top with diesel engine as far I know. All OEM soft top models were gassers including the FJ73 I owned.

I know from slumming around some Australian cruiser forums a middy is rare, any soft top cruiser (excluding 40 series) is very rare. I thought I read somewhere here that Australia didn’t get soft top 70 series new….of course I’m getting old and my brain doesnt work right 1/2 the time.

Haha xD Actually I tried to think about it but that's true, never saw a factory 73/74 in soft-top in our European diesel world.
Even in the light duties, plenty of LJ70 and a few KZJ70 soft-top but never saw a 73 soft-top.
On the "should not exist but saw one" it's a BJ71 soft-top that I saw once... Should not exist (neither as a BJ70 LHD soft-top).

73/74 are extinct for good, as well as diesel in SWB 70, but what still exist is the GRJ71 in softtop. If I had 85k€ to spare I would take that as a fun Cruiser =D

In my case, many parts of the flare itself was secured to the bracket by rivets. Looked like a factory job too despite that rivets suck. I don't think the flares were ever taken off prior to my ownership.

So when I did the cleaning under the flares, instead of re-using rivets. I used M6X1.0 bolts from Toyota under p/n: 90119-06278. Now if I ever want to remove the flares, I just simply unscrew those bolts. No more drilling out stupid rivets. You may have to re-tap the bracket after rivet removal for the bolt, but super easy to do.

Thanks! I thought at first that you were talking about the using bolts for securing the brackets to the body, because in my case flares are not secured to the brackets by rivets. But now I get it.
 
Sorry I wasn’t clear. I left the rivets alone that attach the brackets to the body itself. If those brackets ever came off it will be because I am taking them off for good and filling in the holes.

Only a handfull of countries in Central Europe had HZJ73/74's sold new at the dealer . Belgium ,The Netherlands and Germany are the only ones I know off . Apparently a few have been sold in Spain on special order but we are talking here about 2 or 3 cruisers , if you see one listed in the classifieds in Spain ,Italy or France it most likely was exported used from any of the 3 countries named before . They are getting a rare sight in Europe , on some of my trips I rack up over 5 k miles without actually seeing another 70 on the roads anymore . The good examples these days are in the hands of enthousiasts and they realize if they let them go they might never find another good one anymore .

I believe that the lhd HZJ73/74 is truly the rarest of all 70 series platform and when you look at the classifieds it proves my statement here , heck a website like Bring A Trailer hasn't even had a lhd HZJ73/74 on auction in it's existence !

They must have sold very few of them then as the 3 I bought used in France already all came out of Belgium or The Netherlands new . I think it is possible that they used a general Toyota brochure but maybe not sold everything in it . I have seen toyota brochures in Belgium with pics from the Lj77/78 in it but I know they where never offered there .

No no these are the exact heavy duty models sold in France in 1993, in the back it's the legal detailed specs of each. Note that the HZJ70 that was not sold in France does not appear.

I know multiple people that have French original HZJ73, it's definitely a looked after vehicle but not crazy impossible to find. There are generally a few to sell.

But yes they are rarer than the HZJ75 or on the other side the LJ/KZJ73... Which makes sense, if you needed a utility van for commercial use a Troopy was best suited and if you needed a personal car, a light duty was most appropriate.
And yes Belgian HZJ73 are quite commonly imported in France (but never saw a Dutch one) because they were sold as 5 seaters in Belgium while only sold as a 2 seaters utility in France (and the Netherlands) for tax reasons on big engines.

Even in Belgium about 99% of the HZJ73's where registered as commercial van aka 2 seater as the cost to register it as a person carrier was ridiculous . Fun fact for the HZJ73 from the Netherlands , up to sometime in 1993 they where just the same as for the other markets and had the rear mounts for the rear seat in it , I don't know what time in 1993 it changed but the later hzj73/74 send to the Netherlands had a rear floor from the factory without the rear seat mounting points or the substructure for it .

Good to know that France did get new hzj73's although if you look at the classifieds it doesn't show that , whenever I see one at le boncoin it clearly is a previously imported one as there are tiny differences in the same trim level between the Euro countries , not all LX or VX versions had the same equipment .
