Can anyone comment on the largest box they have mounted on their factory bars? Im looking specifically if anyone has put a box longer than 84 inches on. Pics would be a bonus too.

We have a Thule Sonic XL that looks to be 90 inches in length (according to Thule site). I remember REI saying the XXL would not fit without blocking the hatch.

I'm trying to attach a pic.... Hope it helps!

We just got back from Hilton Head SC and snapped this pic of a twin mall cruiser with matching Thule.

Thats perfect. Thank you saricbell. Now, one more favor.... Can you tell me if you have 2.5 inches to spare when the hatch is open? The Thule Force XXL is listed as 92.5" and has 4 more s.f. of space. Thanks

would it be possible to fit 2 on the top? what if you put the aftermarket wider rails on it, would they fit, has anyone tried it? Are they all set to open on the same side, or could you have one's that opened on separate sides? just curious, I want more storage up top also:)

I have a Yakima Rocket Box 16 and a Sky Box 21. Both fit on the factory bars on my wife's Lexus RX450H without interfering with the hatch. Of course not the same vehicle but it is much smaller and has no problems. I use them on the cruiser as well but attached to my 78" Thule roof bars. No issues getting 2 boxes side by side, plus 2 bikes or a kayak :)

What are you loading up? I have a Yakima 80" (I think), and I load that past its limit every time. I'm afraid one of these days it's gonna come apart on me and all contents end up on the road.

I'd think the larger you have the more inclined you'd be to overload it.

It looks like there is a little more than 2.5 inches.. Here's a picture or two. REI said it wouldn't fit according to their "little book" but who knows.

I also believe the claws to attach to the rails are adjustable. So you might be able to move the rack toward the front of the car for even more clearance...

A]ll of the higher end boxes open on either side. I've had two on my bmw wagon on Thule bars so I expect it would also fit a LC roofline.

I use these Thule boxes: Boxster, 2100, 1200, Spirit (discontinued, basically a slightly smaller boxster).

They seem to work quite well up to 150 mph.

thanks for the info, I'm gonna give that a try, it's either that or buy a trailer:) I'll keep it under 150mph!!!

Great, thanks for the pictures. I'm just not sure do I want the XL or regular size. I'll be mounting on factory cross bars also. Did you compare the XL to the regular size before the purchase? I also really like the boxter and alpine...crap to many choices.

We only looked at the XL, not the XXL (Sonic). It has a good bit of room and is perfect for a family of 4 with 2 toddlers and all their stuff. REI has a few in stock to compare and Rack Attack (online) has really good video reviews.

Great thanks. I've purchased off rackattack and they are very good with great pricing. I'm really liking the boxster, expensive though. The majority of use will be skis and snow boards, boot bags ect for me, the wife and my 7 year old boy. I was just comparing the 3 above boxes for the last 2 hrs and still didn't make a decision.

So this is what I scored. It's the "Atlantis 2100" by Thule. Basically it's the same specs as the newer models but just a slightly older design. 92.5"X36"X18"
Fits fine, only thing is I would pay attention to, is not to load the front too heavy as it seems to extend a little further than probably designed to. That being said I just drove 1929 miles with it and had zero issues.

The Slee step sliders made it easy to get in and out of the box. I was debating on the step style vs the tube style slider for my 100 but after seeing the obvious advantage of the step, that's the way I'll go.

Hey Woody, that top box is awesome but what I really want to know is what rear carrier you're using and will the gate and hatch both open unobstructed and loaded like that? I carry a Yeti 45 and a Rubbermaid 25gal action packer and would love to stow both on the back. Thanks in advance

Don't recall the brand and there isn't a sticker on it anymore. It was just the biggest/most heavy duty one they had at the local truck-camper shop. I'm sure you can find one and just put it on at the shop to make sure it's a good fit. And yes both the gates open no problem. I actually bought it for my 40, but just so happened that it works on the 100 and 200 just fine. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
