Landcruiser 100 Series Door Handle Replacement.

Landcruiser model FZJ105R used in video but should apply to most models.

Front LH & Rear RH handles replaced in video (covers both key barrel and non-key barrel handles)

I could not find and information on how to replace these so decided to create something myself. These handles are made out of plastic which degrades and cracks eventually when they become old and brittle.

A Comprehensive Guide / HOW TO on installing new 100 series Door Handles.

Explanation on how to re-use the old latch clips, seals and how to apply grease/lubrication to the new door handle is performed.

Like and share around. The reason I made this was becuase there is nothing available on the internet on how to do this, despite how bafflingly stupid and simple the job is.

Don't be daunted by the task !

Credits: to my son who helped with the video.

For Door Panel/ Trim removal see this great guide:

Hopefully this helps someone!

For disassembly, is there a trick to getting the metal rod pushed back out of the plastic clip? I've rotated the plastic clip to different timings and still couldn't push the metal rod out. I was pushing with a screwdriver hard enough I was scared I'd break something. In the video it jumps over that step without explaining.

Just stick a flathead screwdriver in and turn, while pulling the metal outwards and it should slide out with ease.

Thanks @highkick05 , this was an enormous help today.

I have been having an issue with water intrusion into my doors when it rains (the LX lives outside) and had replaced all the belt trim on each window without any noticeable change. It turns out, the handles on both rear doors were broken at the retaining bolt on the front side of the handle. Because of the angle that the door handles pull at (away at the back, applying pressure toward the front) and because I never look at the handles when I am opening the car, I failed to notice the breaks and that the door handles were no longer properly sealed.

I ordered 4 new handles from Amayama for $280 delivered. These were closer to $100 each domestically.

I was able to get the door cards off and replace both rear handles in about an hour, including touching up some small paint/rust spots under the handles. The hardest part of the whole thing was getting the damn window escutcheons off.

Looking at the problem once I had access, it appears that the on both handles the plastic cracked and failed. I had expected that it would pull free from the metal sleeve, but that isn't the case. On both handles the plastic broke off entirely from the body of the door handle, leaving the bolt tight to the door and the sleeve and surrounding plastic intact (but very brittle).

I am now rocking a two tone look, with chrome handles up front and black in the back. I'll do the front handles some time next week to complete the look and be almost chrome free.

For anyone else doing this a few comments:
1) It really does feel like the window escutcheon plate is going to break when you try and get it out
2) My door cards had some evidence of dampness/mold at the bottom rear of the interiors, despite the vapor barriers being completely intact
3) My testing shows that some water will come in through the moving parts of even the brand new door handles, but it no longer enters from around the seals
4) The forward bolt is easy to thread in by hand, the rear bolt on each handle needs to be placed with the 10mm socket. Dropping it is annoying, trust me.

Have not seen it break like that before . Put the right amount of force in the right area and it wouldn't surprise me. Yeah, I have been lazy and put holes in some of those plastic weathershields and have noticed water comes in on my front driver speaker. I mean to tidy that up properly when/if/eventually put sound deadener on the car. Have kickers in there now so will fix it soonish.

Definitely buy the quality ones from Partsouq or toyota dealer. The handles I replaced in the video broke within ~6-12 months. I have now put 3 quality ones on from there and they have been remarkably strong even with kids pulling on them. Just better quality plastic!

I understand the desire to change out the chrome but IMO, LX Limited Edition is quite rare, best in original form. But if you are out in NY (rust), it might be a lost cause already. Here's one sold on BAT earlier this year.

Certainly a reasonable perspective and no, she's not a lost cause (yet). It's easy enough to swap back to chrome handles if there is a desire down the roaf. I'll be leaving the rest of the limited edition touches intact, especially the black wood finishes, which are fantastic looking and deserve to be maintained.

That's exactly what I did, OEM only for something that's going to get used constantly and have my kids yanking on them regularly. I'd expect these will last the remaining life of the truck at this point. Unless I over tightened these like the last guy...

The black wood is the best part of the Limited Edition. Many of the parts are already NLA.... so you might consider 'hoarding' pieces (anything L.E.) if they are in future need of replacement.

Any photos of the black handles installed? Did they require paint or prepainted?
