Looking for reccomendations on a place for lakeside camping in late april / Early May? We have a small tent trailer but most of the sites I have found are closed during this time and don't open til mid may and June. We were thinking of kings canyon area but again most of the sites are closed. Want to take my daughter fishing and have a campsite with a view if possible. We are located in San Diego.

Not far from King's is the upper Kern River with many camp sites near the water, many free. There is good fishing, scenery, weather should be good and not too long a drive.

But be warned, the Kern is a dangerous river that has taken many lives. So watch your kids if you go.

If you want to go up 395 that's a whole different world!

If you want to camp out, June Lake not so much. You could drive about another hour and go to Twin Lakes outside Bridgeport. Check out Mono Village.

All around Mammoth, Bishop, and many more are great stream camping sites with good fishing. Google 395 fishing and the towns mentioned and you will find lots of cool camps.

June Lake is OK, but it has a lot of cabins around it and is not very big, so it was never a place we camped at.

I can't help with reservation sites, but there are lots of camp grounds, public and private all along 395. Google Mono Village, if open, I bet you would like it.

Opening day for fishing season is on the last Sat in April. After that the area gets more people.

Can't help with the recommendation for a reservable campsite with a view but if you're going all the way up to June Lake, I recommend a stop at Keough's Hot Springs. It's family friendly with a large swimming pool in addition to the soak area. There's a little snack bar and no creepy naked people lurking around. They have camping too with full hookups- no lake view though. Also don't miss Convict Lake. It's got an AMAZING view all around it, a great trail all around the lake and I hear the fishing is good too. I don't think there's camping, but seriously, we were blown away by the scenery. You can't tell from 395 that it will be so awesome.
Hth. Pm me if you want any more details.

Yes, by all means don't miss Convict lake, even if you just stop there along the way.
There is camping, with limited shade. You'd have to inquire about reservations. They have some neat little cabins too. Beautiful setting, I always get a great vibe when I visit.

There is free soaking at Keough also, downstream from the campground:

not sure what you mean by "if you want to camp out, june lake not so much"?

there is a campground there, I am looking for a state type of campground where I can reserve a spot ahead of time.

Tons of USFS campgrounds all along 395. I wouldn't even bother with reservations. Find out what might be open at that time then see if you can reserve something.
