I'm considering rolling up to the Tahoe area with some friends this weekend - would like to get in some offroading while they play in the Truckee on Sat.

Can anyone recommend some good trails? We'll be either taking just my BJ42 (lifted and locked on 31's), or the 42 and my BJ73 (stock with winch). Sooo the Rubicon is out, but the 42 can do some moderate stuff, or the 42+73 can do mild stuff... whats fun?

Would I get the 73 through Strawberry Pass without hurting it?

yep, I'll chime in for ya.

strawberry pass would be fine, but I have not been over the pass yet and there may still be some snow.

rubicon to the springs overlook would be awesome. your rigs would do fine on that

Barker pass, but may still have snow.

I've been reading some more on Strawberry, sounds like thats doable.

I'd love to do the 'con, but I don't want to end up as "that guy" who is clueless and in the way of the hardcore crowd. What do you mean by the springs overlook? (are there no @#$@#in free maps online, sheesh! I'mma have to buy one now...)

Thanks for the reply, sorry for being clueless.

no prob.

lots of people go to the overlook. you won't be "that guy". plenty of room to pass. basicly you go in backwards from Tahoma. take the trail for a few miles in reverse to the huge overlook that looks down on the springs. it make for a great day trip with plenty of challenges, but not hard-core.

it really is very worth it. also, Barker pass heads up from there.

Cool.

How long do you think Tahoma to the overlook takes?

I'm reading the descriptions of Slick Rock and Deer Valley, those sound doable as well, maybe even easier than Strawberry. How much do you think I can fit in a day?

the overlook will take a few hours round trip with some hang out time. it is well worth it and if you are in truckee, it is the closest.

strawberry is usually a half day round trip run

both deer valley and slickrock are more difficult than strawberry

deer valley is a day round trip if you loop back on hwy 4 to markleeville and back to 88

and slick rock is a few hours, but not close to tahoe. it is 2 passes south on hwy 4.

Gotcha, ok, deer valley and slickrock are out. I'll be camping in SLT on Friday and then can start early on Sat. to play until 6 or 7 pm.

I would love to do Strawberry and then head to the 'con and see how far I get before I need to head back to camp - is that too ambitious?

I looked at people squeezing 80's and 100's through the pinch rock on strawberry so I'm not too worried about getting the 42 and 73 through there, but the 73 isn't lifted so I'm a little concerned about the boulders. Should I be?

you won't have any problems. the TTORA (http://www.norcalttora.com/trails/strawberry.php ) description and pics are old and the waterfall and pinch rock have changed and are not that difficult. the pics look way harder then it really is. I considder it more of a giggle run, but still challenging. I have had a stock 4-runner through there with a bit of rock stacking, short wheel base rigs do just fine. pinch rock is no problem. the rest of it is just plain fun.

both are prolly pretty doable for a full day.

Went to the overlook two weekends ago and there were still some good mounds of snow across the trail. Just a heads up.
