Hey all,

I have a 1994 Kzj78 Prado.

I have a problem with glow plugs not working/glow plug light not coming on all the time, and the engine will only crank but not fire if the glow plug light on dash doesn’t illuminate.
Could this be a problem with the ecu?

Glow light is only a ECU check light, Keep the glow going for 10 - 15 seconds or until you hear a small click from under the dash. May be longer in cold conditions.

Problem I’ve got Oldblue is the glow light doesn’t light up all the time, then the engine won’t fire.

I have to toggle the key back and forth until the glow light comes on before I can fire the engine.

Wondering if it’s a potential ecu problem?

this was my experience
when glows were working the glow indicator on the dash would only light for say a couple of seconds but if you listen carefully you can actually hear the glowplug relay stay on for longer in the engine bay, this is how it should work.

Mine actually died all together, even though the light still worked on the dash and the relay clicked on I wasn't getting any power to the glowplugs-as mentioned in a previous post this is most likely a dead cold engine sensor on the pump that tells the ecu the motor is cold to turn on the glowplugs

Being as I like hacking into the factory stuff to make it simple I bypassed the whole glowplug ecu thing and just ran a pushbutton switch to the factory glowplug relays hooked directly up to the battery, I find holding in for 10 seconds on a 5 degree C morning works really good

so far this mod has lasted just on 3 months with no damage to the glow plugs

the factory set up ramps the voltage to the glowplugs , this might be to increase life?

also a good theft deterrent as good luck starting this during winter time without any glow

Thanks for the reply Waikato Willy.

I’m going to get the ecu checked over to make sure it’s not any dead capacitors on the board.

Other then that if it is the cold engine sensor which talks to the ecu, could you recommend a replacement? Also, where is this sensor located?

Cheers mate

that was the majic question, I had to do this all quickly as my wife was using the vehicle to take our kids to school so it was a 2hr hack job, I never identified the sensor but I bet this dude will know GTSSportCoupe

he posted up awesome manuals for the injector pump

Thanks Willy.

If all else fails mate I will go to a mechanical pump and put the glow plugs on a button.
Bloody ecu!!!
