H4 is All wheel drive (4WD), with center diff locked. Hubs lock engage the front drive train. Should both be off for use on normal roads.
Accidentally I just shot the respective manual section for another thread.

The additional information on the plate are:
C color code of paintwork
TR Trim code of interior
A Axle code
TM Transmission code
So moe information can be decoded from the VIN:
Thank You.... Question.... The H4 button.... When should that be used. ?? If you don't mind explaining the Proper use.. it would be Greatly Appreciate. I owned Jeeps for over 45 years... But a nubie to the Cruiser., Sent you a Pic. Hope you don't mind explaining.
Thanks,
PeterD

You can engage 4wd when the tlc is stopped or less than 5mph, then press hub lock (front wheel hub "electric"), ---> 4wd (front drive shaft propeller ) voilá 4wd
but if you change the position lever from h2 to L4, the "system" will connect everything like what I described in 4WD mode.

The most recurrent failure of this entire system, first is the "electric hub", and secondly some of the solenoids that operate to couple and uncouple the front drive shaft.

regards

Ok... So it sounds like that's an Achilles Heel of the 4wheel drive in this Model. I'll pickup the solenoids.... Where are they located,... To replace. Should the Hubs be greased? If so... How is that done?
It must sound to you like I'm making you My mechanic ..... I'm just leaning on your expertise.
If this was a Jeep, I'd be comfortable being elbow deep in Grease... But I'm unfamiliar with the Cruiser.
I truly appreciate your advice... Thank You 👍

Am I missing something. I went on the Link.. it redirects... But no manuals... Just dealers and some Healthcare Info.... What did I do wrong?
The link works for me. If it doesn't work for you you can also find the thread on top of the 70s section of the forum. You need to read trough the posts in the thread and follow the enclosed links to third party sources. Some might be dead but there are working ones. Unfortunately there is no complete library in the forum. It's a bit of work but you definitely need some manuals.
Also you should use the search function to find respective threads.
Another great source is YouTube: There are several videos online showing how to do crt. things.

Hi, checked the Link you sent to look up the manual. No Toyota Land Cruiser 70 series.... Any model. I'll surf the Net and see what comes up.
Just letting you know 👍

Yes, the electric hubs have always been problematic. But the solenoids shifters are fairly trouble free from what Ive seen.

Get one obstacle at of the way at a time. Threads get really confusing with half a dozen maintenance jobs compressed into one thread. The workshop manual is your best place to start. Greasing hubs, replacing solenoids are best left to later after you have read a manual (FSM).
Most toyota parts have a part number on them. Put the part number into google and it usually gives a you picture, price and availability info
Youtube is becoming a good resource for maintenance videos, but keep an open mind. They are largely made by amateurs who sometimes make honest mistakes.

Pics of front Hub.
Haven't drove in 4x4yet... But going to The Smokie Mountains this weekend.... I'll let you know how they operated.
I'll Post My Pic's on Monday.
