I got a call last night on a D60 rear axle out of a '69 Chevy PU. That's all the info I have it right now. The price is right but I know little about D60 rears.

Skool me please. Would I be better off looking for a 14b for the rear? Will a D60 hold up to a SBC'ed 40 in the rocks?

Thanks,
Mike

from what i've seen, a 14bolt is a hell of a lot stronger, but the diff also sticks down further. what tires are you running? and what front axle? are you going to narrow your new rear axle or ?

Currently 38.5 SX's..... who knows about the future. I'll go with a D60 front when I find one I can afford.... currently an FJ60 front.

your going to have a big difference in width between your axles, it would seem to make more sense to swap both axles at once....from what i've seen a lot of times you can find a front and rear set of one ton's for essentially the same price as what you can get a front D60 by itself for...

oh, and if that D60 is a '69 version, then i'm thinking it should have coarse spline axle shafts, which is DEF not desirable

The '69 D60 will have 16 spline shafts. Not worth it.

I have always liked the 14 bolt. They come with 1.5" shafts (30 spline) so you don't have to worry about boring the spindles like on a D60. Yes they have a lip on th ebottom but that is easily shaved. My way of thinking on 14 bolts is make it so you can drag it over a rock without hanging up and you're fine.

For the initial cost of a 14 bolt and the strength that you get stock versus after about an additional $4-600 to get 35 spline shafts into a 60, it's the way to go. A Detroit is a couple hundo cheaper than the D60 version too.

No problem. Also, most 60s will be only 30 spline 1.31" (IIRC) So again to get 1.5" shafts, (an actual strength improvement over an FJ60 axle shaft) you have to get the spindles bored, get new side gears for the carrier, (or a new carrier/locker) and get new replacement shafts.

The 1-ton swap isn't planned for a while still.... I'm working on a SBC swap this winter with a few other "must-do" projects as well (like your old PRP bench seat) .... It'll be a busy and cold winter for sure. When I got the call last night it sounded too good to pass up, but my knowledge of d60's is VERY limited.
