OK '60 OWNERS TIME TO PUT YOUR MECHANICS CAP ON:

I was out wheeling my '60 in Holister, CA and was making a 3PT turn on a shallow slope, and while backing and turning in 4L I heard this loud KRUNCH, POP. After that the steering was not as reponsivie as it was before.

I managed
to get off the hill and checked things out on the level ground. When I make a a LH turn I heard a bit of grinding sound in 4L, when in 2H the problem goes away.

I looked at the knuckels and the passenger side one is not perendicular to the ground.

I drove home about 60 miles on 2H and noiticed a slight vibration at freeway speed.

Any ideas, tires hitting the shackels maybe ??

You blew a birfield. Reverse full crank 4lo is a bad combo.

AAAAHHH, so now I am offically in the broken Birf Club..... It did not take much to break it. I am glad I got home OK.

Are there any other No-No's with regaurd to mechanical sympathy on a '60

Mark

They tend to brake when the wheels are near full lock with max power input.

Yep, you gotsta grab a Longfield!

Sorry to hear about the birfield breaking. Another option is Marlincrawler They make replacement birfs, and they
fully warrant them against breakage. Break it and return it
for another. There seals are great, too.

Not affiliated, just a happy customer.

Ouch! Don't you hate that feeling?

Glad you made it back okay.

Oh well, you like working on that beast anyway, right?

Put the new birfs in and we can take that thing up Red Mountain this summer and break them again.

yup.... thats a sucky sound isnt it :lol::lol:

make sure you get all the chunks out :lol::lol:

Holy DOO DOO !!!, I hope mine are not that bad. Thing is they are not making much noise at all in 2H, and only a little CRUNCHY in 4H while turning. I'll be calling Marlincrawler, in the morning.

the thing about warranty's.. The longs hold up the best, period. I love Marlin, but bobby's are better.

And fixing things out on the trail sucks...

Longs are on the way to me !!

Thanks for all your help !
