I'm enjoying my 'new' '01 LX but it only came with one transponder key. Based upon the collective IH8Mud wisdom , I got the seller to throw a second transponder key into the deal. Well now we have the key and a set of complicated instructions involving clicking the lock button 5 times, closing the door, clicking 5 more times, turning the key... Despite trying this several times with the seller, it didn't work.
The new key now remotely unlocks the doors but won't start the car.
I have read the prior posts on depressing the brake pedal 5 times... (https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?p=372915#post372915)
I'm wondering:
Is the brake pedal method supposed to accomplish the same thing as the lock buttom method?
Does each method work on both LCs and LXs of this generation?
Is there any way I can screw up my new key or worse the computer in the car by trying this too many times?
Any advice on the subtleties of success in this area would be appreciated.
Thanks

Will it physically work the locks in the doors?

Koda ... the door lock method is for programming the remote alarm/door lock/open control only. The brake pedal/ignition key routine is to program the chip and immobilizer part of the remote key. You have to do both routines to register and make the new remote/key to work with your truck. No problem on the number of attempts, but make sure you follow the number of times, interval (1 sec. per cycle of step/release) and sequence in programming. There are limitations to the number of master key (3) and valet/spare keys allowed to be registerd per ECU.

Good luck!

NM - yes the key will open the door by actually sticking it in the lock and turning it. O.S. - Thanks for the input, I'll try that. I'm still hoping to save the time and money of going to the locksmith or the dealer.
